I'm waiting.... (tapping fingers).
Splotches is gettin old!
Nuffsaid111 private msg quote post Address this user
Came across this, this morning from Mark Bagley CGC signing and have been seeing more and more of this at conventions as well.

I know we are in a "different strokes for different folks" & "yea it's not for you, but someone else might like it" hobby. That said, I just cannot fathom how this new-fangled thing going on of scribbling with markers over the entire artwork of a cover is desirable to anyone. It took me forever to barely accept signatures on covers; but this to me, is just excessive and obnoxious.
I love remarques as much as anyone. I am, afterall, an OA collector more than I am into comics. Blank corners of a comic or blank sketch covers are great for remarques. But this.... sheesh...I dunno. And then paying for this "Under the Bridge graphitti". Ugh. Not me. No anytime. No way. Ever.

Just curious how this community views this example?

Besides that atrosity what is he using to draw it? I can't recognize the marker or pen or whatever that is. Thanks in advance for any help with identifying it.

To me, it looks like complete crap(the book with pink) I don’t mind some signatures, however I still prefer my covers original and unmarked.

Mine as well toss a few hundred into a sewer drain. It's less waste than discarding paper AND plastic

I think it's all a matter of perspective. Personally, I do not like what Mark Bagley is doing there. I don't like that at all but I think I mostly don't like it because its associated with artists that I don't overly care about. If you swap out Mark Bagley and replace him with an artist I admire (Kirby, Ditko, Schomberg, Baker etc.) all of a sudden that book becomes the centerpiece of my collection.

I agree it's obnoxious.. but I think its obnoxious because the artists' doing it are not the artists we really care about. If you're a huge Bagley fan...that's a great piece to you. Just a thought.

@GAC good point. Particularly with the Ditko, Baker, Schaumburg.

I suppose that's why the "different strokes for different folks" applies always.

I am actually a Bagley fan but if I sent this in, I'd be livid. Simply livid and frustrated as hell and would be soliciting offers already on this forum.

That goes for the pink graphitti bridge as well. 😀

I've been moving away from wanting comics signed - some of that has to do with not desiring much of the current talent and the talent I do desire are either not readily available or have passed.

For 'remarks' or sketches, I prefer those in my sketchbook - but then that means being there in person.
Would have to be someone special for me to want a blank cover sketched to send it in rather than be in person - especially as the send in option is often multiples higher in cost than the sketch in my sketch book price!

It's hard to escape the "different strokes for different folks" arguement for this type of question because it's all opinion. For the most part, personally, I wouldn't like that on my books from most artists...but their are some artists where that becomes a prized possession.

Thankfully there are enough comics in circulation/on the market where people can do this to their books if they like and still have clean books for the rest of us to buy....hopefully we don't see this on truly rare books.

1 of my 2 sketch covers
this I got in person on a blank cover only because he wasn't offering sketches in sketchbooks the other was a CBLDF purchase pre-sketched book at their convention booth...

I absolutely love this artwork from Piero Manzoni.
Beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder.

I'm just not sure where I would hang it in my house?
Perhaps the bathroom?

Come to think of it, perhaps I'll request something similar from Bagley over that pink graphitti monstrosity.
I wonder if CGC would grade it?

I'm curious if that pic is at a convention or at a BCS or GC signing, and if the person that submitted it requested that remarque be as large, and pink. I used to take paint marker with me to conventions for sigs, but found out that paint markers have issues with the inner well sealing when broken open, or re-encapsulated, the paint marker comes off of the book.

@makahuka I'm pretty sure it's a CGC signing. I came across it as a CGC instagram story and the other pics were in cgc facility it appeared.

So I guess someone asked for pink 🙄

If I were to deface the entire comic, I'd at least take brown color paint pen. Yknow - kinda fitting. 😀

I don't mind signatures or remarques that can find fairly open space on the cover. I would be fine with the Cerebus, Venom, or Ripped posted above. But I don't like it as much if the cover is already busy or the addition too big. I also don't think I could define the line (even for myself) without just seeing examples.

I'm not a fan of remarques and think they devalue the book and take away from the cover art.

I'm also not a fan of artists that would even do this to a book. There's a point where you can just say no.

@flanders I agree with you. What I find particularly strange is the industry is loaded with blank sketch covers that are made to get a ........ drum roll..... sketch! - on the "Sketch cover". Imagine that?

Yet, individuals take the busiest cover and artists put whiteout or (pinkout in this case). Why on earth would one select a busy cover that one can barely see the remarque as well as destroying the existing artwork when there are sketch covers available for this?

I'm just dumbfounded by the nuttiness

My gosh it is beautiful. Black. Detailed. Rich with colors. and it works so well with the existing cover theme.

I'm taking offers now. I have dedicated my life to drawing cars and well... the art is an associated theme with the comic afterall too. So that works with Herbie rides again. At least I THINK it's Herbie Rides Again. How would one know with that chicken scratch... I mean.... beautiful remarque I did

My Stan Sakai remarks are friggin gorgeous. I specifically placed the window in the spots I wanted him to do them though. The Bisley remark I got is effing atrocious and maybe it’s because I left a whole cover window??? I do have an art background but I’m not a professional so I don’t like to dictate the creator. Sometimes I wonder what they see that I dont.

I might be okay with it if it wasn't Pepto Bismol pink. Then again, maybe not. Signatures shouldn't ruin a cover. They should enhance the cover.

However, if the person signing the book isn't the artist, like Chris Claremont, then perhaps he doesn't give two sh!ts about the cover art and signs the book with a signature that looks like a tornado that's just blown through a trailer park.

I get signatures done differently to most collectors.

If a writer or artist works inside the book I get them to sign on the first page.

If a artist did the cover then I'll get them to sign the cover.

This is the only remarque I own that isn’t over a blank. I like that it shows the reason the book is special to me, Spider-Man 2099.
