While it’s usually premature to hit the panic button or start planning for the playoffs after only one game, yesterday’s results definitely raised some concerns for several teams. I thought it might be interesting and fun to play a little game of WORRY or DON’T WORRY. SEATTLE: After an embarrassing home loss to a division opponent, the Seahawks have to be smarting a little bit. Matthew Stafford has always been a streaky player, and he was hot yesterday, lighting it up with a bunch of no name receivers. The performance of the Seattle defense was equaled only by the poor performance of the Seattle offense. The Hawks, whose greatest strength is a reliable home field advantage, stunk it up against a team whose biggest playmaker is on IR. It may not be time to hit the panic button, but it is definitely time to WORRY. MINNESOTA: This game should have been over at halftime. Instead, the Vikes kept turning the ball over and keeping a seemingly inept Tampa Bay offense in the game. In the second half the Vikings faded and the Bucs put together enough plays to steal a game on the road. To compound the problem, the Vikes are facing the defending NFC champions on Thursday night, presenting a very real possibility of an 0-2 start. That said, everything that went wrong for the Vikings is ultimately correctible. They play in a soft division with a schedule that favors them being in the mix at the end of the season, so I say DON’T WORRY (yet!). CINCINNATI: The Bengals came out and laid an egg in the opener. While that never feels good, they do have some legitimate circumstances as far as starting a rusty QB fresh off an injury. Also division road games are never easy. I will say I am less surprised with the performance of the Bengals and more impressed with the performance of the Browns. Cleveland looks to be a team to be reckoned with this year, but ultimately so will the Bengals, so DON’T WORRY. NY GIANTS: Everything was going along so smoothly on that first drive… Then came a blocked field goal for a touchdown and the wheels quickly came off. Nothing like an embarrassment on national TV in a division home game to start off the season. There is really nothing positive you can take away from this game if you are a Giants fan. Granted, it is only one game, but given the strength of the division and overall toughness of the schedule, it may be time to WORRY. Any thoughts? |

Quote:Originally Posted by michaelekrupp While I like the analysis and optimism, I'm worried. While it is all ultimately correctable, I saw things that truly concern me. Basically, it was all on the sideline. Before the half, we gave up three turnovers. For two of those, Cousins lost the ball and the Bucs recovered. For the third, Cousins tried forcing a throw and it got picked off in the red zone. Several times during the first half, I saw Cousins on the sideline, sitting alone on the bench, looking defeated. He wasn't studying the opponent's defense. He wasn't engaging with other players. He wasn't planning with the coaches. Nothing. He wasn't leading. That concerns me. Also, I think his attitude spread to others in the second half. I saw both Jefferson and Hockenson look like they had given up in the fourth quarter. I know I only saw glimpses of the sideline, but what I saw was a leaderless team. That's concerning. |

@Jesse_O Great analysis! I noticed Cousins’ body language as well and I agree that is cause for concern. I still say don’t worry yet because this game will be quickly forgotten if they upset the Eagles on Thursday night. If they lay another egg then, it will definitely be time to worry.

Terrible way to start a season. They'll get their ass beat by the Lions too so it seems to be more of the same in Chicago unfortunately. |

@Surf75 Although I confined my initial analysis mainly to playoff teams from last year, I agree with you that they have to be a little worried in Chicago. I think as far as the Bears go, it may be a case of unrealistic expectations. Justin Fields has shown me nothing thus far to make me believe he is a legitimate pocket passer, in spite of the hype train. Look how many people on the forum expected Chicago to win that game! I think the preseason hype balloon has definitely been punctured. I could make a similar argument for the Steelers. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement and hopefulness when everyone’s team is undefeated, but it’s wise to remember that, ultimately, preseason means nothing!
