Blacking out serial numbers19912

Collector jaysonslade private msg quote post Address this user
I can’t seem to understand why a seller would blackout the serial number on a slab unless they were trying to scam someone. What am I missing??

I'd like to say I still turned out alright, but that would be a lie. flanders private msg quote post Address this user
They are paranoid someone will use their photo to fraudulently sell a slab that isn't in their possession. I don't know how that could come back to hurt the actual owner.

They may be selling multiple copies of the same title/issue/grade. They don't want to take new photos on each relist. They're using it as a stock photo. So if you had a dozen Venom L.P. 1's at 9.8, you could sell them all from the same 2 photos.

If they don't obscure the number, a buyer with remorse can say "You didn't send me the copy in the photo. I can tell because the number is different. It's not as described."

If the seller does it this way, they should explain what they are doing in the description, to avoid confusion. If the buyer doesn't like it presented this way, they should pick a different seller.

I think they are also trying to prevent other collectors from claiming the book as their own on the CGC registry.

You can always have the seller send you a personal message with a photo of the label with nothing blacked out and do your own checking.

The level of suspicion could or should be proportionate to the price. I have seen people sounding the alarm that a $150 comic must be counterfeit because they can't verify the number, or it's illegible. Ridiculous paranoia. No one's going to counterfeit cheap books. It's like counterfeiting quarters at 50 cents each.

The chance of fraud and maybe a issue of privacy when it comes to seeing how much you paid for the book, which won't matter if you bought it from a platform that gpa records.

Because CGC doesn't put flaws on the label anymore you HAVE to look at grader notes. I would not buy the book for that reason alone.

Exactly, if a book has a lose cover they don't put that on the label anymore just in the grading notes.

Maybe they are hiding the number because the book is stolen and they don't want anyone knowing the theft matching serial numbers.

Would that be the same as selling a car and hiding the VIN number and chassis number ext. Until you pay for the car then it's revealed?

Maybe it's paranoia for them.

The only 2 reasons I'm aware of are:
1) One photo for multiple listings (as Chester explained).
2) Naiveté. Thinking they're protecting themselves from something but really aren't.

I had no way of knowing that 9.8 graded copies signed by Adam Hughes weren't what you were looking for. drchaos private msg quote post Address this user
I don't black out serial numbers.

Having the serial number means that the potential buyer is free to look up the grader's notes and to confirm the authenticity by checking the index number against the CGC census.

While I would prefer that scammers didn't use the images of my books it really isn't my problem if they do.

Another reason that the sellers are hurting themselves by blacking out the numbers.

Either the buyer gets lazy and just passes on the book or they PM the seller asking for more information taking valuable time the seller could be using to do other things.

The primary purpose of getting something graded -should- be authentication.

Redacting the code when a book is for sale defeats that purpose.

So if the number is redacted, just bid the ungraded book value ;-)

Year's ago someone on eBay used an image of my AF15 to run a scam. They tried it twice before eBay finally shit-canned their loser ass. Ever since then I black out the number because it's highly unlikely anyone with a brain would buy a book with this type of image. I don't sell comics, but when I decide to, I'll use a regular image.
I've never actually seen a 'for sale' comic with a blacked out SN.

eBay has a spot where you put the grading company and type in the serial number in the listing. I alway do that, plus it is in the pictures.

If someone has a boatload of Void Rivals 1 at 9.8, and they want to black out the number to sell said boatload, I'd still buy 1 if I was interested. It's a 9.8 new comic. It's a clone. And it's a whopping $70. Of course, I'd also be checking that they have a full return policy.

I would not purchase a more unique book, or an expensive book, listed that way.

My theory -

Years ago, somebody had his pic lifted off Ebay and wrongfully used in one of those registry things, so he started blacking out the numbers on his listings. Then all the lemmings started doing it as well ... without having any idea why.

Probably not true, but it sounds good.
