Unverified signature - what would you do?19841

Collector Bobashek private msg quote post Address this user
It looks like one of my books that may be coming home soon is a Ravage 2099 #1 signed by Stan Lee where the signature was not verified. I know it's legit since I got it signed in person but now it will be encapsulated with an unverified signature. This wasn't cheap to get pressed, slabbed and submitted for signature verification but would you leave it slabbed (I will for sure if it comes back 9.8) or would you crack the slab and try to sell separately? I know there's not a ton of demand for this book signed (not sure if I could still recoup my costs) so its kinda iffy.

I didn't realize until it was too late that the CBCS rep labeled this one to be slabbed even if verification fails.

Thoughts?

@Bobashek - Not sure what I would do, but there’s no way it will receive a 9.8 with an unverified signature on its cover (the sig will count against the grade as if anyone had scribbled their name or a few words on the cover).

I thought Stan came with a sealed sticker for proof. When did you get it signed?A lot of his last signatures before he past was hard to see.I had my Stan signed in the 90s so they didn't have logos like today.

The blue label slab should say, "Stan Lee unverifiable by Beckett". I had one like that, signed by the man in front of me, that came back that way. It was only a 4.5 but it made me so mad I cracked it out and put it back in the collection raw. Unbelievably frustrating but what can you do?

Same thing happen to me I had my book signed in front of me also and it failed. Since I knew it’s real I optioned it to be slabbed and put all ticket stub and convention book in with inside the bag. I know it’s real I wanted to protect it. @figment I was pissed off also. Lol

I had it signed in person when the 2099 books came out (1992?)

I know there is this elaborate carbon dating of pen ink and quasi-A.I. methodology of assessing the legitimacy of a signature.

But I think they are being extra special careful with Stan Lee and other high value signatures (i.e. Kirby). If it ever got out there that there are fakes out there that were verified by CBCS, the whole program success would be questioned by the social media nuts who hate CBCS. "See see see how bad this company is!!!"

Not to pick on hundreds of random artists that attend dozens of comic cons every year, but who the f is trying to forge a Scott Hanna autograph? It adds nothing to a book and no one cares except the submitter for themselves. Stan Lee gets hundreds of dollars more value. So they're going to be extra careful behind the scenes.

Reputation for this program is critical here.

That dude who simulated Jim Lee autographs and they passed verification was a very bad thing a few years ago.

All that said, I'd sell it raw if it failed and I personally witnessed the autograph. I'd put that statement in the description and let the chips fall where they may with final price. Someone will bite and they will be getting an authentically autographed Stan Lee autograph even if you're the only one who knows for sure

I always check the box not to encapsulate if signature verification fails. I wouldn't have a book in a holder saying unverified by Bas. I would crack it out and leave raw

It was dropped off at a convention and he did it all online.

Once you get it back it would be nice to see a photo of the signature. Here's three CBCS verified copies:

Ravage #1 CBCS 8.0:

Ravage 2099 #2 CBCS 8.0

If I paid to have it slabbed I'd just leave it in there for protection and call it a day.

So you actually believe there are currently no fakes sitting in verified slabs?

Sure there are.

Just like there are misgraded books sitting in slabs. Just like there are books with resto sitting in blue label slabs. Just like there are signatures that were never witnessed sitting in witnessed slabs.

Just like there's fake art hanging in museums.

Nothing is absolute.

You can either enjoy comic book collecting or you can worry about all the what ifs.

CBCS just posted the grade. It got a certified 6.5 off white/white with “Stan Lee signature unverifiable by BAS” with a 3/4 front cover line scuff & small scuff near middle spine. Those scuffs were not there when I submitted but alas, I didn’t take pictures first. When will I learn? LOL

People are willing to pay more for a signature they assume is real, than for one Beckett says they can't verify.
