The investor in me wonders - this CBCS 9.8 Hulk 181, would it come back as a 9.8 CGC? If not and it comes back a 9.6 CGC, would the $$ drop be prohibitive? After all, there's LOTS of fees involved in getting a $25k plus book shipped and graded... (It's not going priority mail, AND the grading fee (4% is about $1,100), and return shipping costs...

I think worrying about the grade dropping is the fear here... lol

The investor math is simple:

P(CGC grade at 9.8) x likely sale price less fees at CGC 9.8 + P(CGC grade at 9.6) x likely sale price less fees at CGC 9.6 + P(CGC grade 9.4) x likely sale price less fees at CGC 9.4 minus cost to regrade and associate insurance = expected proceeds.

If those expected proceeds are > the price paid for this book (plus taxes) then it is a buy.

If someone believes CGC systematically grades higher than CBCS, it should inform the math. Of course, can’t really know where a CGC 9.8 would have ended last night… so still some risk here during a time of wild swings in these books.

The colors of that hulk are not the deepest. The page quality is not white. And it is a mis wrapped cover.

That's a factor I think for this book.

If I was going to spend that kind of money I'd want no white showing on the left hand side and white pages.

It would be interesting to revisit this through todays lense.

Old Debate: IH181 vs. GSX1

It's always going to be GSX #1 for me. I've never really liked Wolverine. Dadgum Canadians... always tearing up Jack and killing Betty.

I think the cover of gsx is so much better. I don't know how much that matters but if I was going to have one on my wall I would want that one.

I remember that for decades 94 was the bigger book and I could never understand why. GS had all the origins and was the 1st appearance of many characters. Also it was Giant Sized. Strange

$10k

I've seen some nice raws with pretty colors in the raw 8.5 range go for $8k.

Thinking I'd by the 9.8 for $10k then flip it to someone that buys slabs and not books for $20k

Then buy a nice raw VF then bet the rest and lose it at the track.

My above avatar says it all, thanks Jesse 👍

Seriously, I wouldn't buy that book in a ultra high grade.

Price level I'd be looking for a clean and complete vg.
The ship sailed on that book about 6 years ago price wise.

I would say it's a good time to grab a 5.0 but I was busy ignoring everything you posted @southerncross

Why would GAC cast 3 votes to the cover that beats his own cover on purpose to lose the cover contest?

close races are always more interesting than runaway wins.

As long as I don't have to come up with a unique new idea for a weekly contest, I'm good 👍

That was one of my acquisitions during the MCS Monday auction. I've been tracking this book and patiently waiting to see if it would drop under $300. I almost got it for a little less, but someone placed a higher bid in the waning seconds. I immediately placed another bid, which, surprisingly, turned out to be the winning bid.
