Too Much! It's too much!1977

COLLECTOR DarthLego private msg quote post Address this user
I'm not digging this new trend I'm seeing of a ton of store variant covers for every single issue of a book. It was bad enough when just the #1's had all the variants. This is just too much to keep track of.

It is too much. I try to be aware of the key/important variants, but I gave up on all this every issue is a variant foolishness a loooooooong time ago.

Star Wars #1 kinda killed the fun of the store exclusive variant when there were 9,000 variants for sale. I'll still buy Transformers variants but that's pretty much where it ends, unless it is a pretty cool cover.

100% agree. DC is really doing this big time with rebirth. I was trying to get any cover I could but it just got what too expensive.

Boycott it. That's the only way to stop it. As long as it makes $$, they'll keep doing it. Of course, this requires all comic-dom and greedy investors comply...

Yeah, we've past the breaking point. I'm probably going to dump all my variants and pretend it never happened.

I learned my lesson in the 90's. I only buy what I like and what I want to own. The biggest problem is some of the better covers are in short supply and the prices go through through the roof as soon as the book comes out (or sooner).
A friend is trying to get every variant for Harley 1 and another book that escapes me at the moment. If he succeeds, he will have over 100 covers and its only 2 books. Its costing him a fortune.

I'd rather take that money and buy a nice golden age book.

That's what I keep telling myself: instead of speculating on variants, spend that money on a PROVEN silver or bronze age book.

I pulled all my titles. Only thing I read now is TMNT or Spider-man. Period. Everything is getting out of hand.

Trump should sign an exectutive order "No more variants".

I learned all of that in the 90s and the variant "gimmicks" that these companies produced.

Okay...trivia time!!

I have my own opinions, but...curious to hear what others think....

A. What was the first "blank/sketch" cover produced?

B. What book has the first variant distribution of four covers or more for a single comic book.....this answer maybe be "five" covers, but not quite sure, as I am getting old.

*smiles*
Cheers!

B. X-men #1 would be my guess. It had multiple covers that all formed a single image, along with a gatefold covery of all the previous covers.

B. That would be my guess too.

For question A....if you are wondering....I think it was Zero Hour #0.

I agree. I will admit to buying variants, but only covers I really like.

Sadly, most variants aren't that great to command the money that the stores commissioning them want.

Variants worth doing as well! I loved those books.

I can see the value in getting some first issue variants, key issues (where something or someone significant happens/appears first), or the random 1:50, 1:100 once in a while.

More than that though, and they are just trying to squeeze us for every cent they can 😥. Obvious sales gimmick and agreed, its TOO MUCH!

The timing of this thread is funny.

I just bought a book with one of these covers today.

Not sure about (a)

(B) is batman legends of the dark knight issue #1 with its 4 colors. Used to have all of them...down to just yellow now.

Good call...I forgot about that one, I think I have a couple of the covers come to think of it.

1989 - Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight - four different variants - different cover colors

1990 - Spider-man #1 - three different variants - green, silver and platinum
+ later printings aren't really a variant of the original, just a reprint of the original with a different cover.

1991 - X-men #1 - five different variants - connecting covers

Looks like B:LofDK seems to be the first. Anyone else?

FYI - Superman: Man of Steel #1 was the first comic with a "variant" cover...according to what I found online.

Understood...but I naturally had the question "which was the true first variant"...thought I'd share my research finding.

I believe the first blank sketch cover was a he-man: masters of the universe published by Dynamic Forces.

I have tons of the Legends of the Dark Knight, in all colors. Speculated heavily on them.

So far, a mistake in investment. But they are pretty side by side.

I also invested heavily (and I do mean heavily) in the various Spiderman #1's. Of those I could get.
