Can someone explain to me why anyone would pay that much for a fifth print same art when the first print is easily obtainable?

Scarcity.

First prints are a dime a dozen with more than 2,000 CGC graded 9.8 copies on the census. The last first print in CGC 9.8 sold for $77.00.

Fifth prints are as rare as hen's teeth in that grade.

So? There's nothing special about it. Now if the fifth print had unique art that be something special. But it's a 5th printing, same art, it's scarce because nobody needed it at retailers, everyone already got their fill at 1st, 2nd, 3rd prints, etc.

The cover is different.

Much like the 35 cent variants on Star Wars 1 this version / printing is hard to find and the market for it is greater than the first print. The fourth printing is also desireable.

Also, later printings were subjected to more abuse early on leaving very few 9.8s when the book got hot.

As I mentioned, the cover for each printing is different (Look at the title of each to see one of the differences). For reference here are the others:

First Printing

Second Printing

Third Printing

Fourth Printing

My dad and I collected all the different variants of the death/funeral/return of superman together back in the 90s. Our idea of all the variants was simply newsstand/store. I can remember seeing (and throwing away as well) plenty of the 2nd, third etc printings. Whooda thunk those would be the valuable ones decades later!

@shrewbeer The irony is, the only reason people place value on them today is because so many people trashed them as worthless back then.

You took the words out of my mouth.

One reason Hulk 271 is worth so much today is that no one cared about Rocket Raccoon and the books were badly neglected.

Could you imagine if they treated comics with dignity back in the day? Instead of folding them up and stuffing them into pockets, scribbling on them, taking hole punches to them, etc. We'd all be sitting here today with copies of Tec 27 not even worth a weeks paycheck.

If everyone had their single digit Superman books my books would be worthless.
