Because ASM 300 is the most valuable (mainstream) modern, it has the widest range of condition books subbed. Many moderns have majority 9.6+ subbed. Not a reflection on actual grades of the full population, just the economics of what makes sense to submit given market value. Some other minor drivers are clean+press timing, book specific attributes, but these are secondary to the economics of submissions. |

Say that someone sends in a beat ASM 300 because Venom. It gets a 3.0. If the next nine copies in are 9.4s, the average grade for those ten books is 8.76. You can't average out the 3 with a book that gets a 15, so you need a lot of books in the 9s to counteract any low grades. |

Just got back. I know many of you are chomping at the bit for details so... - First of all, I got reamed out by my family for driving there a couple days in advance to find out exactly where I had to go the day of the procedure. Apparently, they have these things on your phone these days (GPS) that tell you where to go. But I'm determined to be the last person on Earth who has never owned one of those evil devices. - I have always despised the fact that hospital gowns are put on backwards. I don't really enjoy walking around with my butt hanging out for the world to see. - I was lying on the table, with the procedure almost ready to begin. Just as she began to administer the anesthesia, I got the urge to go to the bathroom. Next thin I know, I'm waking up in the recovery room...something tells me they had a mess to clean up. - He found one polyp (2 last time). I guess the decline means I can go 10 years before the next one? Going without food for a whole day isn't something I want to do again! |

I'm sure @ebaymafia is thrilled that his post has been hijacked and turned into a vomiting/colonoscopy thread. It's still better than two members bickering about nonsense.

Back to the petty bickering: The low number of 9.8's in ASM 252 and ASM 300 sticks out like a sore thumb compared to the other books in the top 10. Even if you don't include the stupid high numbers from Spawn, Venom and ASM 361, it's well less than half of what you would expect based on the numbers from the other books. Probably the most comparable book is Secret Wars 8, and it has more than 3 times as many 9.8's as either of these books.

It's been commented on already, but maybe the ASM #300 has a lower 9.8 percentage due to the all black back cover and maybe spine ticks and other imperfections happen more easily on the book since it has 52 pages instead of 36. ASM #252 has a back cover that's half black and Secret Wars #8 has a back cover with a completely white spine.

Quote:Originally Posted by EbayMafia I assume you’re talking more about the absolute number of 9.8s rather than percentage (I hope so or the dead horse needs more beating). Secret Wars likely had about 2x the print run of ASM300 or ASM252 so that closes much of the gap. Then we can see what share of that print run was submitted and it is clear that many, many raw copies exist out there. Unfortunately the bias of what gets submitted is skewed heavily by how much more valuable ASM300 is (see above, and above, and above) so not a random sampling. Then it is the other factors already discussed. The book itself, the timing (in other words, the likelihood of pressing before sub, double counts in registry data affecting grades lower than 9.8, etc). Would also be interesting to see the distribution channel mix. I suspect that has a major role on the “filtering” of total 9.8s out there. Look at the CBCS data for newsstand vs direct shares and relative grade distribution… So, the selection of population skew ($ value), the print run size, distribution, book characteristics, timing of submissions. The thread can now return to colonoscopies and/or critiques of the critiques of the topic of the thread. |
