This explains most of it. I think there is a timing component to it also. When you factor in the variables of when pressing became a common practice and when the books achieved "slab worthy" value, that may play a role in the distribution of grades. ASM 300 is 11 years older than NM 98 and 4 years younger than Secret Wars 8. But it achieved wide-grade "slab worthy" value before both of these books...in an era when pressing was not widely available. So many of the slabs with grades below 9.0 may not even exist today. In fact, many of the 9.0's-9.4's on the census may well have been cracked and pressed since they were first graded. Certainly many were not cracked, but that 34,000 number is probably overstated by several thousand, all of them likely being less than 9.6. NM 98 and SW 8 would be more likely to have already been pressed before the first submission.

And and and...TMNT 1 is a magazine!

Pedantics aside, I guess the bigger point is that there are less ASM 300 9.8's than one would expect to see when comparing it to other moderns...regardless of the ratio. ASM 252 is similar to ASM 300 in low number of 9.8's and almost 3-to-1 ratio of 9.6 to 9.8. While Secret Wars 8 (same age as ASM 252) has a high number of 9.8's and almost a 1-to-1 ratio of 9.8 to 9.6. Certainly, there is an explanation here, and it most lie either in the printing (colors, etc) or the preservation (reading vs going unsold?). Very well could have something to do with both.

Yes, that is the source of the data. Clicking on that link -> click on ASM 300 and you get the distribution.

Oh, wait, you needed me to spoon feed that second click to “defend” my statement against your erroneous correction?

One day I perused the census pre-covid & post covid for many of these books (and others).
The differentials were almost unbelievable in many cases.

And we wonder why values are suppressed post covid.

ASM 300 in 7.0 or 7.5 was selling for $700+. A book with a B or C-list character that had 20,000+ graded (and likely another 150,000+ ungraded) higher quality copies available.

Insanity.

Personal story about Snickers.
They were my favorite candy while growing up. Up to about 10 years old when I got hold of an entire fun size bag and ate all of them one fine evening. And then vomited them all later that night.
Never touched that stuff since 10 years old and I'm 59 now

Haha the same thing happened to me after eating too many fried cheese curds at the Minnesota State Fair. Unfortunately I don't have the excuse of being a kid at the time, since I was 33...

@Davethebrave is discussing why there are so many ASM 300 submissions. @CaptainCanuck is discussing why there is a relative dearth of 9.8 submissions. The two subjects actually don't conflict with each other at all. There are tons of high-grade copies. The calculated median of 9.2 is probably understated when you consider how many books were likely cracked and pressed for resubmission after initial grading. A surprisingly low number of them get a 9.8 grade.

That's a great way to put it, but what I really want to hear is an overeating story which has lead to a taste aversion.

Wasn't me, it was my cousin. But it involved bacon-wrapped hot dogs from a Tijuana street vendor during a night of drinking.

The link with all the distribution data. Also, the first post in this thread.

Btw, the median was clearly 9.0+ even without looking at the detailed data. The >8.5 mean meant it was all but certain. Math.

The range of submissions -drives- the relatively low percentage of 9.8s in the pop report. Because ASM 300 is the most valuable (mainstream) modern, it has the widest range of condition books subbed. Many moderns have majority 9.6+ subbed. Not a reflection on actual grades of the full population, just the economics of what makes sense to submit given market value.

Some other minor drivers are clean+press timing, book specific attributes, but these are secondary to the economics of submissions.
