Curious About Mentality Towards TPB's / HC's / OMNI's19595

I AM... THE Bat-Manuel MurrayC private msg quote post Address this user
I was just thinking that it's interesting how Trade Paperbacks (TPBs), Hardcovers (HC), and Omnibuses (Omni) don't seem to get the same love and respect and VALUE as their floppy counterparts.

There are a number of comics that get reprinted to death (with varying covers no less) that will command [somewhat] high value, but a first printing of a TPB or HC typically aren't worth more than it's original cover price.

I know HC's and Omni's are typically more expensive, but if it is a high quality production, and it only ever gets one or two printings, then why don't they command higher dollars in the long run due to scarcity?

There doesn't even seem to be a niche market for them unlike Newsstands, Canadian Price Variants, or even Whitman variants for that matter.

And as I write this, there aren't any tags available to add to this post either.

We have a bunch of the Marvel Masterworks HC volumes. They're all first prints, and a few would show a decent return if sold, but we use them for reading so the originals can remain undisturbed. It's also a nice way of getting through stuff you don't collect, but would like to read anyway.

Reprints, and all of your examples are one form of a reprint or another, generally never catch their original publications. To acquire the original copies is much more than the reprint collections. I buy collections because they are a less expensive option.

I LOVE omnibus. I rarely collect full runs. Best way to have it all without selling organs.

I am a HC/ TPB/ Omnibus collector as well as a comic book collector. Since I have been an active buyer of these over the last 15-20 years I have some observations/ comments that may be relevant. You are correct in your observation that an earlier printing of these items does not seem to command more dollars than a current printing. Part of the reason for this is that these books are reprints to begin with, so no matter which printing it is it is still a reprint of the source material. That does not mean that there is no value escalation due to collector demand. The difference is that escalation occurs when an issue goes out of print. Many out of print Marvel Masterworks volumes can and do command a premium among collectors who are trying to put together a set. Marvel has begun issuing omnibus editions, which are basically reprints of the masterworks volumes in a larger format with the addition of the letters pages. Collectors just starting to build their runs can choose these over the masterworks, but many collectors who already have a bookcase full of masterworks volumes will want something that matches the hundred books already in their bookcase. This explains why marvel continues to issue new masterworks volumes, and why out of print masterworks are in high demand in spite of the omnibuses. I have even seen price escalation on some of the omnibus volumes that went out of print, only to have prices fall back to earth when a new printing is issued. Many DC Archives volumes have a similar level of interest, with the added distinction that DC has begun editing some of the more recent reprints for content. If you want the actual golden age stories, with all their warts intact, the Archives may be your only option.

I don't collect them at all for like, value purposes. But I like to buy them to read actual stories. I have a lot of TPB's of the old major stories (Kingdom Come, Marvel's Secret Wars, etc..) and also stories within runs (Hush). Just a nice way to read the stories.

My credo is collect comics, read trades (or hardcovers). So I have a lot of collected editions. There are very few that would be worth more than the original issues collected but a few are and some, while not necessarily exceeding the value of the originals, are still fairly valuable. I’m personally a fan of omnibuses, Absolute Editions, and books by Grafitti Designs and the Marvel Limited series

My ramblings are simple.🤣 The omnibus is too bulky, and I don't like a huge encyclopedia in my lap, some don't have cover art, or I don't want to trash the dust cover, and many don't fit in my comic boxes, some of the comics that I've collected weren't always that great. some issues I just didn't care about, so I do not find a need for an omnibus with every single issue for certain lengthy milestones, etc. so just not my cup of tea(they are a good source of reading older things, sometimes). Trade pb's are cool, especially if I want to read older story lines, sometimes new covers, or alt art, many fit in my comic boxes, and so I don't trash my individual copies in a series, run or collection that I originally read and collected. TPB's are awesome, because they usually contain the beginning, middle, and end of a major story or event, and that's all I want to read. For me the same can be said for a hard cover, much of the above. I don't display many hard back books, I do display comic books, and comics hang on the wall quite easily. Bookshelves are cool, but I don't want a collection of omnibus' when I can display something else, and yes I used to wrestle with putting a hardbound comic book in my library of other types of books, hahaha. Comics, and some tpb's are my exception for reading, displaying and collecting. I do say cheers to all 3, because I thinks it's good for the reading, and collecting industry.

I've always hoped that one day Hardcovers and TPBs and signed limited editions (that which I actually collect), could be graded somehow, someday.

Sadly, they can't..... yet.

My personal feeling is as long as a number can't be assigned to an object then all the folks that make their purchases based on a subjective number won't purchase. The ones with the big wallet and investors want the number. I find it pathetic, but that's what it is.

There are plenty of books out there “ungraded” that go for big $. They don’t have to be the Codice Leicester either :-)

I think the reprint explanation is key and explains 99% of the value disconnect. Otherwise condition, scarcity, etc would support omnibuses and other formats having some value.

Personally, I like leather bound (books). They look good on a shelf. Well protected too.

I like collected editions, but they fill different roles for me.

When I began reading Ultimate Spider-Man, I bought the trades to fill in to my starting point. So I read everything in order, just not monthly at first.

My wife and I enjoyed the Buffy Season 8 series; I have almost every variant of each issue, some original art pages, and most of the hardcovers. It's a nice expansion of the collection.

And then there's the ones I have just to read. I am not going to casually flip through my issues of Kingdom Come or Crisis on Infinite Earths, but I do like to revisit them.

Collected editions have a place, but it's not going to ever overshadow floppies. The exception may be for print versions of webcomics; I have a few of those, and I wonder if they may someday have value as first physically published editions (assuming the webcomic maintains a presence in the zeitgeist).

I don’t treat reading as a collectible. I want it to be read in any form if I like it.

TPBs? During my High School days, I got into the Danny Ketch version of Ghost Rider. So every day I finished my work, or had no reason to study, I would read the first volume.

HCs? This is a touchy subject for me. I like them, and like how they look. But like TPBs, I would worry about their covers since I can become OCD over things like that.

Omnibus? Great ideas, but tend to be well beyond what I feel comfortable spending.
