Good video on how to safely remove newton rings from newer CGC slabs19223

I have not set up at a con since 2029. PolarisNuclearSS2020 private msg quote post Address this user
Just found this on YouTube, watched it and thought I’d share it here.

I haven’t tried this, not quite sure how the Mylar is supposed to be slid in the slab while not coming into any contact with the book itself.

Wait... I thought the new CGC slabs weren't supposed to have Newton Rings.

The rings are from the inner well touching the outer well. Whatever is slid in doesn’t touch the book.

I did it recently and I think it was worth it. CoalTiger private msg quote post Address this user
Looks easier to just use CBCS.

I didn't think the sides of the current slab version could be separated like that. I know older ones could and I've seen "fixes" like this before using a strip of a backing board. Seemed like the backer could actually scratch the inside of the slab so the mylar trick might be a better option if it can be done. Shouldn't have to be done at all though.

This guy had 32 out of 32 with Newton rings. I'm not a mathematician but that's a pretty high percentage. How have they not come up with a fix yet.

I am going to hazard a guess that part of the process and decisions resulting in the Newton’s rings prevalence for CGC is related to slab security / tamper-evident approach.

All things equal, I’d take Newton’s rings (reasonable amount) over less tamper-evident packaging.

I don't think they ever said that.

They'd have to pay more for slabs.
Cheaper to use what they have and hope the returns don't get too excessive.
I think they bank on most people not caring enough.

I’m not a scientist but is it surprising that plastic materials that are made with petrol products look like gasoline on water?

This is a rhetorical question. No sides. I just happened to think about this recently and didn’t know how dumb I am. I mean, my shitty phone case is all gas on water oiled out on my screen.

@HeinzDad looks like the creek where the train chemical derailment happened when the woman drug a stick across the bottom of the creek and the oily discoloration rose up. That's what in the chemicals used for cgc slabs. Best way to avoid them is

Yeah, that’s not horribly far from me. I was speaking on plastic manufacturing in general.

You’re of course correct. Though the materials are distinct (oil on water/outer plastic shell on inner plastic well) with no separation between.

All this talk of oil reminds me of a sale I made some time ago.
The message upon receipt of the CGC slab from the buyer to me was "This CGC slab is damaged. It has oil in it".

I just didn't even want to go into it

No better time for a science lesson for folks like that. Hopefully a polite reminder that they're called Newton's Rings because Sir Isaac Newton investigated and described the phenomenon in 1666 as the visual interference pattern generally occurring when something convex touches something flat.

Either that or CGC has to oil those puppy's up to get the inner well to slide into the outer case.

Why bother? It's not affecting their bottom-line. People won't stop submitting.
