Stream of conscience here. Superman as the Boy Scout. Less grittier Batman with B&B. Then Supergirl to complete the Big 3 (initially). As anti-heroes, Authority, Swamp Thing, and Commandos are introduced. Waller as the puppet master. Galactic chaos with the Lanterns (pick a color). Booster Gold for comedic relief. Status quo is broken with the Amazonians, which sets up Phase 2?

A Swamp Thing movie??? If it's as well done as the TV series, I'm all in!

It sucks, other than hopefully Swamp Thing. Lanterns has been promised for ages, so nothing really new with that one.

It's okay, they'll probably just reboot again in 3 years.

I'm interested. It's got something for everyone, and I like that it's starting with Superman. I like that it looks like there's a long game plan, and that there's no Justice League on the horizon yet. So I'm going to stay positive on this and see how it shakes out. Regardless of how it goes, at least, for me, Matt Reeves' Batman universe is going full steam ahead.

This right here. That's all I ask. Don't care what is adapted; just concentrate on story & delivery. Do something a little different. Put your lifeblood into these productions

The rest will come after that regardless of the specific character adaptations

Swamp Thing: James Mangold Teases Involvement in DC Studios Movie

By TIMOTHY ADAMS - February 1, 2023 09:30 am EST

The just-announced Swamp Thing movie for DC Studios may already have a director attached, thanks to a tweet from James Mangold. DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran finally shared the first chapter of the new DC Universe on Tuesday, which is being called Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters. It came with the announcement that five movies and five TV shows will be in its initial offering, with one of the five movies starring the supernatural Swamp Thing. While no directors have officially been tied to any of the big-screen projects, Mangold is at least sharing his enthusiasm for the character on social media.

James Mangold shared a page from Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson's run acclaimed run on Swamp Thing. The full-page illustration shows Swamp Thing standing in the marsh with the sun setting in the background. He's looking back over his right shoulder at the reader, and a caption box at the bottom of the page reads, "Like one, who on a lonely road doth walk in fear and dread... and having once turned round, walks on... and turns no more his head... because he knows a frightful fiend doth close behind him tread."

Swamp Thing Will Be Dark, According to James Gunn

The live-action Swamp Thing project for DC Studios was one of the many projects James Gunn discussed during his and Peter Safran's presentation to the press. This version of the character will owe more to the horror comics from which he is descended than the campy and adventure-driven movies and TV show that made him a household name in the 1980s and '90s. Not unlike the short-lived 2019 TV series, this version of Swamp Thing will be explicitly tied into the fabric of the DC Universe.

Gunn promised that Swamp Thing would bring a dark tone and a distinctive voice for the filmmakers — two things that some fans have worried would be scarce in an increasingly-connected DC Universe. Prior to the failure of Justice League, those were the elements that most differentiated Warner Bros.' DC movies from those at Marvel, after all.

"The final film we want to talk about is Swamp Thing," Gunn said during his presentation. "And we bring it up because it's important to point out that in these stories, although interconnected, they're not all tonally the same. Each set of filmmakers brings their own aesthetic to these films, and the fun is seeing how these tonally different works mash up in the future. This is a film that will investigate the dark origins of Swamp Thing."

Will James Mangold Direct Swamp Thing?

It remains to be seen whether James Mangold was teasing his involvement with Swamp Thing, or merely sharing his appreciation for the character. Swamp Thing will join Superman: Legacy, The Authority, The Brave and The Bold, and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow in Chapter 1 of the DC Universe.

For now, Mangold is staying busy preparing for the release of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, the fifth movie in the Indiana Jones franchise. It's set to be released this summer on June 30th.

It seems like that is exactly what is envisioned. Given the best comic book movies of the past 20 years were nearly all DC, we know what can be done with the content. We also know what happens when $ takes over, seeing the awful decline of the MCU in its latest phase.

I am very interested in seeing how they use The Flash. If it is anywhere near as good as early indications suggest, it may be an awkward transition…

This plan may also be the last chance to save superhero movies (in the near-term). I think the idea of fatigue independent of quality is misplaced. Some of the recent superhero content (MCU) is like low-quality pop music. Infectious hook at best but when you’re in the middle of the latest melodic trend, it starts to wear on you. Same songwriter across multiple “artists” using the same formulaic approach. All about image, marketing and $. It is this trendiness that causes big spikes and then big falls in popularity. Less staying power.

Seems like Gunn and Safran are aiming for a middle ground. Preserve the artistic license that facilitates great filmmaking (like Nolan’s Batman, Reeves’ Batman, The Joker, Iron Man, etc) but with some sort of cohesion across stories. Best of both worlds. Hopefully.

I think the inclusion of The Authority is interesting and noteworthy. I don't think they've ever been an involved part of the DC universe.

I'm just hoping for quality films. I liked alot of the prior DC films but I know most did not. I'm rooting for DC. As a fan of the genre, I hope there's room for a successful DC and Marvel cinematic universe.

That one came out of left field for me, too. Will they be integrated into the regular continuity (how???) or will this be how and 'infinite earths' are introduced?

Agreed. Having the competition out there will keep both of them putting out higher quality product rather than getting lazy, which would explain a couple lackluster Marvel efforts lately.

Beating a dead horse: That's really not true. BvS and Suicide Squad have low critic scores, but every DC movie has been majority-liked by the audiences.

I was pretty sure Swamp Thing would be included as a major player in the lineup. If there is a master plan, I'm thinking that it might culminate in the Jason Woodrue/Floronic Man story that Alan Moore wrote for Swamp Thing 21-24. Multiple DC characters participated in that story to lesser degrees.
