I am always amazed at the unique and varied hobbies people have or love, that do that special thing for them and take them mentally into another place. I think they are the true geniuses in this world because they can build and collect and define the hobby or collection they either invented or specialized in. Anyone can read trade publications and gain a working knowledge and follow the Jones' so to speak for a hobby but few actually create their own special place and take and become the pioneers that created it or defined it. Some awesome things being shown here, keep them coming ! neat stuff guys thanks for sharing. Best luck to each for your specialized collecting and enjoyment .... |

My hobby aside from comics is working jigsaw puzzles and I picked up seriously during the pandemic in March of 2020. Since then I've worked 286 puzzles. 80% of them are 1000 pc puzzles with the rest being 500, 1500, or 2000 pc ones. It started slowly but I became hooked and now I puzzle every night at home when the day is over and the wife and I watch TV or listen to music or whatever. I really picked it up last year and worked 119 puzzles and then another 113 this year, with maybe one more before year end. Not long after starting I began to take pictures of each puzzle and keep a spreadsheet containing the name, size, brand, etc of each. This started when I accidentally got half-way through one and realized I had already worked it before. Now I can just check against the census before working one. I have a goal to work 1000 puzzles / 1,000,000 pieces. Probably will hit that goal in about 7 years if I don't lose interest. My wife also puzzles with me but doesn't keep up with how many she works but it's probably just a quarter of what I work. However, she has an unofficial puzzle group where she keeps up with all the ones we work and swaps out with other people of like interest whom we've met mostly by accident when buying used puzzles at estate sales or yard sales. We currently have about 150 unworked puzzles in the garage. My favorite are super hero character puzzles which I have a hard time passing up when I see new ones. Here a few pics. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

@Byrdibyrd Thank you. If I ever slow down it will probably be just to work the ones I really like. Trust me, I work many that I don't like so much but they are just next in line. I glue most of the super-hero puzzles but not sure what I'll do with them all. I have a few hanging up but they take up so much space. |

If you like the results then you may be compelled to do a few more. EDIT: of course I don't know the average diameter of a 1k piece puzzle. Matting and framing could be a bit costly. |

@Pre_Coder Glueing takes practice but there are some good youtube videos on the subject. I've learned that after you glue the puzzle (topside) you can then glue a piece of poster board to the back and it makes it much sturdier. |

@PhilCoulson, if you put the puzzle on the desired backer before you glue it, the glue will seep thru the pieces and stick to the desired mount. Trim off the excess board and frame. | ||

@HeinzDad I've glued many puzzles and never had the glue go through to the other side, at least not to the degree that I'd want it to. It probably has something to do with the technique - I put the glue on generously but then go over it to remove all the excess (and put it back in the bottle) so there is probably little to creep all the way through the cracks. That's how I learned to glue them. It often gets off the edges so I put wax paper underneath which easily pulls off. |

Comic booking. Years ago I used to play paintball when I could afford it, but the nirvana was the little know tinkering side of the hobby. There were plenty of build across different markers. My all time favorite marker was the Shocker. We took those to the next level (thanks to others with equipment and resources to show proof of concept and custom build the crazier things) strictly out of the pure joy of making Shockers better than the engineers who built them and lighting up the nay sayers. I recently bought a Shocker SFT for a new build that will be somewhat challenging due to scarcity of parts for the 20 year old workhorse. I may be able to beg and plead for custom pieces from people who most likely have CAD files for aluminum parts from back in the day if needed. |

I have launched a benefit to raise funds to help legendary Dallas cheerleader Tami barber with her cancer expenses. She is two years in fighting it and no end in sight so anything that can be raised will help her. If yo grew up in the seventies you would recgnize her, with her trademark pigtails, she was everywhere and a legend before she left the squad. For this weeks girl in my corner feature, I am going to do something different. My girl for this week is going to be Tami Barber. Most of you know her story, small town Nebraska girl becomes legendary Dallas cheerleader in the late seventies at the height of their popularity and is everywhere on Tv and print. She is considered by many to be the greatest Dallas cheerleader ever, the golden standard for DCC for historical importance, recognition and fan love. She is also a good friend of mine. I learned that she is suffering from a long and intense battle with cancer that is not only physically a nightmare, but also financially. So my girl in the corner feature this week is dedicated to Tami, and to raising funds for her medical expenses. This one isnt a Gofund me nor is it a kickstarter ....once I post the information you are able to donate DIRECTLY TO TAMI, via the links provided. There is no skimming or money off the top here, everything goes directly to her. I will be posting her paypal and Venmo both, as well as a PO box for her cash or check donations or anyone that desires to be anonymous. Our forum is her spokespiece, and we will be here to encourage you to support Tami if you are able.....a dime, a quarter, a dollar, it all adds up and helps. We are not posting a desired amount to be reached, her fight is ongoing and she is a few years in already so we need to get her all the help we can. Period. Here is her own story she wrote for you to consider. ' The first thing I want to say is THANK YOU! To the admin of this page for their dedication to all the DCC. There are other pages that hold the name to our sisterhood. But nothing like this one. The fact that over 150 alumni are members and growing, contribute to the content is more important than you think. We trust this forum. This forum is a safe place for us. There aren’t many places that we feel safe. And that is an understatement. For those of you that visit this site and follow our journey, and respect us, we are blessed. And from what I understand, many have been dismissed. Again, I thank the admin for their hard work. So, when I was approached by the admin to see if they could have a fund raiser for me during my cancer treatments. I’ll be honest, it took a few days, and prayer for me to be comfortable with the idea. My friends have been so giving and supportive, I didn’t feel it was fair to ask people who don’t know me. But as I begin my 3rd round of chemo. ( I have some stubborn bits hanging on) I’m grateful for the help. The hospital bills are beginning to look like a mountain I can’t climb. So, here we are, and I’ll leave the rest to Michael. Those of you who don’t like reading a bunch of this and that about Cancer, you can stop here and go on to the details from the forum. But for some of you, I’d like to share my experience, a cliff notes version. Because I’m sure some of you have traveled this road with someone you love, or maybe even been there yourself. In November of 2020, I was living in a magical place. My dream has always been to dedicate my life to animals. I lived in my Travel Trailer with my 3 dogs, a new kitten and 8 parrots. I was working for Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, UT. I’d been there a year. I had to pinch myself all the time. I’m really living my dream. I had been to the doctor for some tests for some issues I was having after having Covid in June. That Monday morning, I got a voice mail from my doctor to call him. I lived so remotely that I didn’t have cell service, along with sporadic internet. I had to drive up the vista to get a call through. It was 8am on a Monday morning. When the doctor’s office answered, they explained that the doctor wanted me to have his cell phone number. “That’s pretty important I thought”. I’d had a test on Friday. Never in a million years did I expect what he said when I called. I was sitting on the top of this beautiful vista, staring at a perfect blue sky when he said. “I’m so sorry. But you have Ovarian Cancer. It’s progressing very fast, and you need to go to be with family. You need surgery and treatment, and you need to go now”. I really don’t remember the rest of the conversation. I was numb, scared and lost. I stared out at that sky and cried. Fast forward to a week later when I was packed and driving 2500 miles to be with my cousin. To a city where I knew no one, and a new doctor that had been sent my records. During Covid! Before vaccines, before any of us knew what was going on with this crazy world. I was instructed to have contact with no one. Do everything online. Get gas, get in the truck, and move on. It took 9 days. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t feeling very good. But I made it. My kids and I were now living with my last living family member, and a wonderful woman who took me in and said, “We’ll take care of you”. I had surgery 5 days later and began chemotherapy 3 weeks after that. That was the first round. 2021, was chemo, hospital, home. Isolated from the world. A CT scan showed my Cancer was gone in August 2021! But the scan in November, showed it was back. 2022 was new chemo, new doctor, new cancer center. The PET scan in August showed the new chemo hadn’t worked. So, here we are in 2023. Newer chemo, luckily, same doctor, same amazing cancer center. And this is how my story goes. I’m going to win this war. I’m living with some bits, but it doesn’t define me. Twice since my diagnosis, I have been blessed to take the field at AT&T Stadium with my alumni sisters and dance!! The best medicine I’ve received. And if asked next year, I’ll be there! Please don’t feel obligated to donate much. I’m grateful for everything. Especially for your love of the Ladies that I proudly call Sisters.' Those were her written words as she wrote them for me last evening. Paypal :grippilates@gmail.com Venmo :Tami-Barber-6 If sending cash, money orders, checks, a new Ashton Martin, a villa in Spain or France, or an estate in Prague, please use her PO box established for this purpose. Tami Barber P.O. Box 1050 San Antonio, FL 33576 Once this posted, all links are live and set to go, so lets step up and help this amazing lady as much as we can folks! |
