Thought I should share this with all my friends here:

Update for December 20 2022: Merry Christmas! And some sad news..

Conan's Comic Corner

Merry Christmas to all our MyComicShop customers and family near and far! I hope you all have a joyful Christmas, safe travels, and get to spend some time with friends and family you may not have seen in a while. And stay warm! There’s no snow in the forecast for Texas, but it’s going to be cold!

I have some surprising and sad news to share: Steve Borock, who joined us earlier this year, will unfortunately be leaving us soon. This is a fully amicable parting from both sides–Steve leaves with our full support and friendship, and our appreciation for the fantastic work he did for us and all he accomplished with us while he was here. It’s not my place to go into detail about the reasons for the move, Steve can share what he wants to about that, but I can say that it’s motivated by personal reasons encouraging a move back home to Florida, rather than anything work related from Steve’s side or ours.

I’ve learned a lot from Steve during his time with us, and I’ve loved our dinner conversations and having him in the office next door to me. It’s been a pleasure bouncing ideas off each other and working together at recent conventions like OAFCon, Baltimore, and the Collectors Summit. From me, Buddy and Judy, and all of us at Lone Star Comics, we wish Steve the best in Florida and with whatever he pursues next in the wonderful world of comics.

Steve’s last day with us will be January 6. He will be missed dearly but we have a great team and we will not miss a beat in the transition. Long-time MCS consignment director Este Bagato continues to do a wonderful job leading our consignment operations, and Philip Pettigrew has been working closely with Steve on the updates to our original art marketplace, and will continue that after Steve’s departure. Those improvements to our art section are progressing nicely and will be rolling out over the course of December and January.

Steve and Este and I will be coordinating closely over the next three weeks to ensure that all inbound collections and consignments that Steve has been handling will be given top notch care and attention. If anybody has any questions about your own consignments during that transition you can reach our consignment department at consign@mycomicshop.com or me at 512-808-7099.

We’re all sad to see Steve leaving but happy that he’ll be with his daughter and grandkids. Happy trails, my friend, and look forward to visits in Florida or seeing you at the next convention!

With warm appreciation,
Conan Saunders

Borock's Bandstand

Hey all! Steve Borock here!

I know that I have mentioned, many times before, what a great place MCS is to work for and it's so very true! The people here are amazing!

While I have gotten a chance to get to know some of them very well and have even made new friends here, there are almost 150 employees in the building. Tough to get to know everyone in only seven months. Everyone here has been nothing but professional and courteous to me and they work very hard for every single MCS customer. Too many to name here, but they all deserve accolades for all they do and the help they gave me when I first started. Like I stated, it's a great place to work!

I have also mentioned before that I am overseeing and working on the MyComicShop ComicArtFans gallery page and revamping the original art section on our site with much help from Phillip Pettigrew. Phillip is amazing at figuring out unknown pieces, unknown artists, doing write-ups and has a great eye with a true appreciation for the art as well! This guy is a superstar!

I could also not have done this without my true friend, the great Conan Saunders. He has been behind this project 100% and is guiding the ongoing updates to the programming of the OA section. I love building and expanding programs that involve anything to do with collectibles! Speaking of Conan, he is not only a genius when it comes to programming, but he is a joy to work with. I am proud to call him "brother"!

So, it is with a very heavy heart that I am writing this today. Something really hit me extremely hard in my heart a little over a month ago.

I was on the phone and FaceTiming with my grand kids who are 4 and 6. Great fun as the kids are real goofballs at times! Love them to death! At the end of the call with my grandkids, I pretty much went into a strange state of sadness, thinking how I am not going to see the kids for a bit. After the kids were finished making their last silly faces at me for the night (Adorable!), my daughter got on the phone and the conversation was like nothing I had expected! She was in a state, to say the least! Crying about her life, which has been very tough on her and the kids for the last five months and, once again, my sadness kicked in. Then my thought process went into panic mode! I am about to be 60 and I don't know how much time on the planet I still have left to be with my family. I am very far away from them as they live in Florida and Pam and I are here in Texas. Those who know me well, know that family and friends always come first in my life. I did not sleep much or think very well for days! It was making me kind of crazy.

I love my gig here at MCS! Working alongside a true industry giant like Buddy Saunders is a dream for a comic fanatic like me! He is a true hobbyist with a giant heart who is still a kid when working with comics and all hobby related material. Just like me! What Buddy has done for our great hobby, most of us can only dream of! I am so proud to call him my friend! And let's not forget Judy Saunders, the backbone of MCS who helps steer the ship in the right direction! She is like a mom to most everyone here, including me! One of the sweetest people Pam and I have ever met in our lives.

I thought this would be my "final gig" in our hobby as I had found the right company. Honest, hobby friendly, a well oiled machine, the largest online retailer, the right kind of ethics and, of course, working alongside the Saunders family was the topping on the cake.

We all discussed the possibility of me working remotely from Florida as I have done previously in my career, but after thinking about it long and hard they knew that they really wanted somebody in a role like mine to be available "in house". That's their way of doing things and it works extremely well for them. I really respect that! They told me that they completely understand my emotions and life concerns. They are so wonderful!

So I had a real tough decision to make: Stay in Texas at MCS and help grow the company or help my daughter while being able to watch my grandkids grow up with the time I have left to do so. TOUGH CHOICE!

At the end of the day though, as much as I love working here at MCS, and the love and respect I have for the Saunders family and the entire MCS staff, the only thought that kept going through my head was "family first"!

I have really loved my time here! I have even learned a few things that I did not already know about at MCS (Buddy's love for pulps is contagious!) and I hope that I have helped them grow in the short time that I have been at MCS (editor’s note from Conan: “yes he certainly has!”)

I will miss this amazing company so very much and, sorry to say, but this will be my final writing for the MCS newsletter. (I will still be reading it every week!) I’ll be around through January 6 and continuing to assist consignors and collectors with anything they need. I know I leave you all in extremely good hands with Conan, Este, Philip, and everybody else at MCS!

As always, Happy Collecting!
-Steve Borock

I read this last night, @sborock, and I can completely relate. 20 years ago, I took a (non-comic related) job in Alabama. Being born and raised in Houston, I was leaving my mom, my siblings and my wife's family and moving to a state where we knew no one. We stayed there for 3 years and really enjoyed it.

However, in the end, we moved back home because of family. Our parents were getting older, we were missing birthdays and graduations and so many little family things that we just took for granted. That family interaction just turned out to be more important than anything else.

So, while I'm sorry that you are leaving a job that you seem to be enjoying, in the end, I'm betting that you are making the right decision for you and your family.

You and your family will be in my thoughts.

My father recently retired and we moved next door to each other. Seeing him play with my kids and having him close by has been the best gift I could have ever asked for.

The comic industry will miss you but your family will remember this time with you for the rest of their life.

Enjoy this new chapter! I’m sure comic books will be involved and with any luck your grandchildren will inherit your love for comics and we’ll all be better off for this.

Tons of love and respect from the Great White North!
