![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Question for the group. I picked up this one shot from 1944. There is only 5 on the census, this being the highest graded and with only one sale in March for a 5.5 for $438. We were trying to establish a value, the only recorded sale could have and most likely was overlooked or not known so I think $438 was a steal. With the 7.0 being the highest graded known of only 5 issues known, what would you think the value would or should be. Very curious to see what you all think. Thanks in advance |

The grader notes: Grader Notes light cover tanning light creasing to cover moderate bends to cover moderate spine stress lines to cover Not much you can do with them except the bends- may be worth pressing out if they are significant. With the two mentioned as former Heritage sales 9.4 Mile High and ungraded 9.0 Davis Crippen, still a nice copy at 7.0 or better Rod |

Knowing there is a 9.4 out there, it hurts the 7.0s value significantly. Knowing there is such a disparity between the two, I would say your 7.0 is around 600 to 750 in value. Keep in mind the 9.4 brings a premium for three reasons. One it's a Mile High Copy. Second it's super high grade. Lastly, it's likely to remain the highest graded forever. The 7.0 may suffer further, as there could be others between 7.0 to 9.4 that may pop up over the years. I collect obscure esoteric High grade GA and SA books, and this has been my experience. Like I have a Holyoke One-Shot #1 which CGC only has one copy graded at 4.0. Rare right? Yet, I have a CBCS graded 9.0 double cover. Hopefully, you can make a little money on this book. The longer you hold it the more it will go up, as GA comics rarely decline, even in the face of a recession. This is due to the fact they are truly rare and very limited in quantity, unlike SA era on up,they usually don't face a "correction" in value. ![]() |

I'll give a different take. There's a combined 10 books on the CGC census..fair to say this is a very small number safely warranting this book as rare. There is only 3 recorded sales that I can see. That 9.4 book is no question benefiting from its pedigree and highest grade on census. GA book collectors/sales behave differently than every other comic book age after it. I think you could easily put a $1000+ price on this book and get a sale. These books simply do not come on the market frequent enough to have competing sales driving the price down....and GA collectors know this. It might be 5+ years (or more) before this books is made available for sale and (going by the census) the odds are that it will be a lower grade than your 7.0. Rare GA books are very hard to price...better to price high with Offers Accepted. If auctioning, it's a little different but GA collectors will understand they don't know when they'll see this book again for sale....this usually drives prices upwards. Great book!! Congrats! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

@Batman66 thanks. I wouldn't even no where to price my #1 at. GA is hard to price, but speaking with guys high up in the auction "biz" that have seen my obscure esoteric books, the pricing is hard because these books don't come up too often. They said that when they do, people will fight at auction, knowing they may not see a high grade copy again. Tough to say. I woukd say a book like yours is best at Heritage or Mycomicshop auctions. Unless you know what you want for it then just set the price. I will say in a recession only small fish retract fom the market, got to eat and pay for gas, but those capable of affording 1000 dollar plus books are less affected by recession, and will continue to pay for rare GA books. Good luck with the sale hope you make a good profit. ![]() |

The ungraded 9.0 sold on Heritage for $179.25 but way back in 2007 ; however an ungraded 6.0 sold on Heritage for $660.00 Dec, 2020 and with scarce golden age selling for premium prices lately, your 7.0 (or more if the 'bends' can be pressed out), maybe $1200 would be a good starting price ![]() |

Also I do find that church copies sell for two to four times normal value. So a church 9.4 getting $3k may make a non church copy in 9.4 sell for about $1k-$1.5k. Infrequent sales might mean a certain book can only have a true value at auction, maybe... |

The Edgar Church copy sold for $3824 ON MAY 14, 2016 That's 6 1/2 years ago (and still the top census copy). Recently, golden age high grade books, especially wartime, are selling for multiples of sales just a few short years ago, and not just the Promise copies. $6,000-$10,000 would by a closer estimate of the current Heritage selling price. | ||

I agree - that Church copy would sell for significantly more today. Likely $6k (maybe more). Very hard to price a book like this. I would not sell at auction but instead list on higher end of potential range and include a very wide range for offers. You can feel out the market better this way. |
