Today I'm at Nijō-jō Castle in Kyōto. I'm on my own because my friend has been unwell and wants to rest up. We've both been here many times, but I hear there are cherry trees blooming, so I'll be checking that out.    |

Nijō-jō Castle belonged to the shōgun, not the emperor. In a subtle dig at the emperor, the shōgun had the castle garden designed with dramatic rock formations and trees that don't change for the seasons. This was to symbolism the permanence of the shōgun's rule.   |

We left Kyōto this morning and are on a bullet train  headed for Tōkyō now. We'll be there for a few days before heading home. In Tōkyō we plan to check out a few more places known for spring flowers and also finish up the Tōkyō 10 Shrines pilgrimage. We have 3 stops left. We may visit one of them, Hie-jinja, after lunch today. |

My new hand towel.    Hand towels are absolutely necessary in Japan because paper products like towels in restrooms and napkins in restaurants are not something that many businesses supply to their customers. |

| @GAC Yup, absolutely true that there are abandoned akiya around. I see the ones that are being reclaimed by nature all the time. It'd be cool to rescue one before it gets that bad. |
