That would so interesting to stay at a temple in Japan!!! I've spent some time at spiritual places here in the US, but I've never been to a temple.

Yoshino and Mt. Kōya are the places best known for temples that provide lodging for pilgrims and tourists. Some can be more reasonably priced than others. I think it would be an amazing experience and I'm hoping to do it someday when I have a little extra cashola to spend on it. Another factor to consider, though, would be that it would be very traditional Japanese overnight accommodations, and I'd have to consider how many futons-on-the-floor I have left in me.

I hear that. When I lived in Taiwan we slept on tatami's, thick bamboo and cloth mats. It's not as bad as lying on bare floor, but it's not much better You get used to it, sort of, but I was in my 20's. I wouldn't make it through the night now! LOL

I'm right there with you. Futon can be more comfortable than one might think, but some can be barely sufficient, too. I doubt my back could handle the latter! 😁

Prior to Ōsaka Castle, this was the site of Ishiyama Hongan-ji Temple, which was a grass roots religious movement. It got thoroughly Nobunaga'd. Here's the memorial.

I'm at Isonokami-jinja Shrine now, where a major archaeological find - ancient 7-bladed swords - was found not long ago. It's a lovely shrine out in the middle of nowhere, and it's a CHICKEN shrine, so lots of pretty chickens everywhere.

Running around to a bunch of shrines on the Shinbutsu pilgrimage today. We are out in the Back 40 now at Yamato-jinja that has a stunning rabbit ema that is, sadly, not for sale. 😢

Went to Chōgaku-ji, a flower temple in Nara prefecture.

It's also a "bloody ceiling" temple.

That ceiling in the temple's main hall is stained with the blood of samurai who committed seppuku (ritual self-disembowelment) when the castle they were defending fell to a besieging army. The bloody floorboards were taken up and divided up amongst a number of temples and incorporated into various halls of worship in an attempt to mitigate any curses that might result from the tragic deaths of the samurai.

Yup, the rabbit in the moon is very popular folklore here.

Had a special bus moment. We pulled up to a stop with a bunch of cops at it. When the door opened, an officer helped one of the most sloshed women I've ever seen board the bus. She stumbled to the front, fell into a seat, and the doors shut. The bus pulled away and she started slurring questions at me. I couldn't tell if she was asking where I was from, where I came from, or where I was going. I will confess to having played my 'clueless tourist' card at that moment. Luckily we got off the bus not long after that.

Seriously, how drunk do you have to be to get poured onto a bus by a squad of LEOs??? 🍻🍷

I'm at Kōshō-ji Temple in Uji. It's a beautiful Zen temple that's off the beaten path. It has several pretty gardens.

We were lucky that when we got to Kōshō-ji they were having a ceremony that involved ringing the temple bell. The bell has a soft blue light on it.

Today I'm at Nijō-jō Castle in Kyōto. I'm on my own because my friend has been unwell and wants to rest up. We've both been here many times, but I hear there are cherry trees blooming, so I'll be checking that out. 😁😊

Nijō-jō Castle belonged to the shōgun, not the emperor. In a subtle dig at the emperor, the shōgun had the castle garden designed with dramatic rock formations and trees that don't change for the seasons. This was to symbolism the permanence of the shōgun's rule.
