Beautiful kirie (stencil cut) goshuin of Kōbō Daishi's mother - one of the people venerated at Jison-in temple.

Seasonal special goshuin from Niukanshōbu-jinja shrine with cherry blossoms. 🌸

Do people actually leave their umbrellas laying around? Or is that a errant translation?

Yes, people will leave umbrellas - especially wet ones- in designated areas. I do it all the time. Never had a problem.

Pretty garden at Chikurin-in temple. There is a special event for spring today in Yoshino, and some temples - including this one - that are usually closed to the public are open now. Very pleased to be able to see this.

This seems like an oddly specific directive ... is this a common rogue umbrella-leaning area?

Directly below is a rack for umbrellas. A lot of places will have an umbrella rack at the entrance to a building. If they don't have a rack, they will usually have a device that dispenses umbrella bags - super-long, skinny bags - to carry a wet umbrella in.

@figment @Nearmint67
Yoshino Day was pretty awesome. The cherry blossoms were past their peak, but still nice in places. They just weren't everywhere anymore. The places we went are temples that provide lodging for pilgrims and tourists. They're usually only open to the people who are staying there, but for this spring event, they were open to the public.

That would so interesting to stay at a temple in Japan!!! I've spent some time at spiritual places here in the US, but I've never been to a temple.

It would be very cool, but it's very expensive, which is why I haven't done it yet. Some day...

Yoshino and Mt. Kōya are the places best known for temples that provide lodging for pilgrims and tourists. Some can be more reasonably priced than others. I think it would be an amazing experience and I'm hoping to do it someday when I have a little extra cashola to spend on it. Another factor to consider, though, would be that it would be very traditional Japanese overnight accommodations, and I'd have to consider how many futons-on-the-floor I have left in me.
