Check out this Shintō torii gate in the middle of Shōen-ji temple's grounds. It's an example of the syncretic nature of Buddhism and Shintō in Japan. The gate is for the protective Inari shrine located to the left of the temple's Shaka Hall. Many temples have a protective shrine despite being decidedly Buddhist, and this temple displays it very prominently. |

| Today we'll be heading out to Nara (the place with all the deer) and we'll be looking at flowers. There's a flower temple (temple well known for displays of seasonal flowers) out there with five-coloured camellias and they're supposed to be in full bloom now. I may have some flower photos for y'all later today. | ||

Got camellias?   Byakugo-ji is a pleasant temple up a not-small hill. The camellias are lovely but they are starting to fall, and I'm sure the rain and wind yesterday was not helpful. They are having an event later today, but we will have gone by then.  However, we are getting to enjoy being able to enter both of the halls here, one of which is usually closed to the public. There are some lovely icons here, including a famous one of Enma Daiō, king and judge of Hell. |

| On a little train headed for Hashimoto Station. From there we'll take a pricey taxi to Jison-in, the b**by temple. Jison-in is also called 'Women's Kōya' as an alternative for women to make a sacred pilgrimage to in place of the more sacred Enryaku-ji temple on Mt. Kōya, which was forbidden to women for a long Long time. I'll get into the history on that later when I'm not on a bouncy little train trying to type on a dinky phone keyboard ⌨️. |
