I heard cbcs was supposed to start grading magazines in April 2022. Just wondering if this is true, and if not, are there plans for it in the future? Also, if not, do they do raw grading for magazines, and what would the TAT be for that? I have a few nice sports illustrateds and the raw grading service would probably be perfect for that. Thanks to anyone who can help!

CBCS definitely does raw grading for mags and treasury edition books. I don't know the TATs, but I believe it's a very cost-effective service: US $10 ~ 15 depending on the age of the book.

PS: Welcome to the forum!!!

Thank you very much for your reply! I have a sports illustrated mag I really want to get graded, it’s not worth a whole lot so raw grading seems like a great option if the TAT isn’t outrageous for raw grading, especially since I would love to get the magazine signed if I have the opportunity in the future.

Sports Illustrated is such a classic, and great for signings. Unfortunately, I have no idea what the TATs are for raw grading. There's TAT info on the CBCS website, but I didn't see anything for raw grading, which is the best option if you're thinking of getting the mag signed.

Don't they only encapsulate a mag not a Treasury edition?

@Element_Lad
I don't think anyone encapsulates a treasury edition, but CBCS will raw grade one.

If CBCS are encapsulating mags, I had no clue!
There is no encapsulating Treasury Editions.

I'm still seeing mags mentioned here & there on the website, but not being offered as an option for slabbing... yet. I still have my hopes, though... along with a stack of mags all ready to go as soon as I get the word.

They do neither.
Others do mags.
No one does TE's/LCE's.

I still don't understand why they can't grade the magazines and have Beckett throw them into one of their magazine sized slabs.

No one encapsulates Treasury Edition size, but CBCS will do a "raw grade" for that size.

The explanation I was given is the label for beckett and cbcs are different sizes. Beckett will authenticate signatures but not grade. Not saying it's a good reason, but that's the one I was given. My guess is is beckett and cbcs want to do what they can to keep the secondary market honest. Just my 2 cents.

When I submitted five magazines in April of last year I entered them on the form as if they were comics.

The invoice CBCS created for them recently has the grading priced the same as comics in the same tier.

Does anyone know if this is correct or if I will be charged the difference later.

If so, what is the pricing for magazine grading?

@drchaos - No, it is not correct, but the pricing will be updated prior to being "Completed/Shipped".

@Randy713 - CBCS had not finalized and put off the official rollout. And while I cannot speak for drchaos, in my case, they did tell me upfront that while they would accept my mags and hold them, there would not be any grading done until further notice. Even now, they have not announced nor can you submit magazines.

My suspicion is that the cgc announcement of halt in new submissions of mags pending their new mag cases along with CBCS having a 15% off promo thru the end of next month, portends that CBCS will officially open the gates to Mags prior to 3/31. This is just my prognostication, nothing that any CBCS personnel has relayed to me.

@drchaos - I believe the pricing is going to come in around Vintage pricing but somewhat below cgc magazine pricing. This is my supposition, not anything that any CBCS personnel has relayed to me since my mags forwarded to CBCS back in 2021.

@drchaos - They could, but the pending CBCS encasement is better than the Beckett and I think part of the delay was to get the backlog down plus they wanted quality and uniformity, instead of a rushed stop-gap solution.

Still hoping for a start date. My cbcs go to says things are still up in the air. What is this the 4th year of waiting. I want cbcs to get it right. But at this point chasing my last comic grail may just have to go to the other guy.

@Randy713 @Byrdibyrd
Raw grade is now only available at "special events" You cannot otherwise send in a book for raw grading. Raw grade not an option on the submission website.

CBCS doesn't grade magazines. That should be the mindset of anyone with magazines that they want to get graded. CBCS has talked about it for years and it hasn't happened.

If you ONLY want your magazines graded and encapsulated by CBCS, then realize the wait could be four more weeks or four more years and NO ONE knows which.

Last year I dropped off 3 magazines (pre 1975) at WonderCon (Anaheim CA) for grading and VSP. At the time our regional rep informed me that there was no timetable when it came to grade magazines. So I decided to have CBCS accept the order without knowing when I would receive them back.

2 weeks ago I was emailed that my magazine order was received and invoiced. I paid the invoice the same day and today I received another email that the books are in grading.

It’s unknown how long the magazines will be in grading, but happy to finally see some movement. Very excited to see the magazine cases.

How much was it for the books? Any way to elaborate on costs?

The invoice does not break out any totals but each magazine was $59 and that does include VSP.

Sent in a wizard comic price guide for grading. Since it includes the poster and subscription card inside, do those things get noted on the label or factor in to the grade?
