@dfoster43 I let my son (3yo at the time) play with one. Accidentally broke off the rearview mirror. JB weld bonded it back on but the new policy is “look but don’t touch.” |

Just watched Zorba the Greek (1964) for the first time. Has to be the worst movie I have ever seen. If I was Greek I would want it banned for the cartoonish stereotypes, and how degenerate they portrayed the average Greek. It left a foul taste yet Quinn won an Oscar? |

Quote:Originally Posted by doog In 1964? LOL The world was different in so many ways then. Part of the supposed charm of the film was that details which perhaps today might be considered a negative stereotype at the time - when there were zero pop culture "modern" affinities to the Greeks - just wasn't the case. In fact it was lauded as one of the few pop culture references to even acknowledge Modern Greeks, and much like Bertolucci's Italy or Godard's Paris, "stereotypes" was how you communicated the cultural moires and differences - especially to Americans, the largest and most lucrative target audience for films at the time. To bring it forward, was anyone offended at the time by "My Big Fat Greek Wedding"? It won a lot of awards. Or any Woody Allen (among many other writes & comedians at the time) movie where being Jewish meant a laundry list of characteristics and generalizations were "accepted as the norm" or 1/2 the jokes didn't work. Or that all cops in NYC or Boston were portrayed as "Irish" (see "Gangs of New York" as well as every movie or TV show ever from 30's-60's), or every New York Ice Cream Vendor as Italian ... Probably not very much, more of a mostly-warm-hearted acknowledgment of cultural idiosyncrasies at which only the thin-skinned might take offense. Of course there are many exceptions, most based on societal change or phenomenon occurring at the time. The strongly negative depictions of Germans in WWI, of Japanese, for example, during WWII in comics and cartoons and movies, or the deplorable "Sambo" type racist stereotypes inherent in depictions of blacks in America that pervaded pop culture for well over a century in vaudeville, movies, sheet music, radio, advertising, cartoons, etc. all had fairly abrupt endings once the cultural phenomena petered out. "Amos & Andy" were both played by white men on radio for example. The common adversaries of War, or the gradual acclimation of blacks into popular culture created that bias and although threads of it sure lasted into modern times (changes to Uncle Ben's rice or Aunt Jemima's pancake mix iconic branding changes, they remove the Native American maiden from Land O'Lakes, etc.) they are removed due to the common truth & understanding that they are negative depictions and offensive. I remember not liking Zorba the Greek because I thought it was boring and I really hated Anthony Quinn as an actor. Try to sit through "Shoes of the Fisherman." bleagh. |

I didn't have a TV when this was first aired so I missed it. Been meaning to watch it for years but just one thing or another kept me from it. None of which were the desire to watch it. Firefly OMG, now I know what everyone was talking about all these years. Just finished Season 1 last night. I can't wait to start Season 2. That was just too freaking amazing to end it there. ![]() |

I am watching The Fall. It is at the very least an ok movie that is stressful to watch. I don't think I have a big problem with heights: I have been sky diving and bungee jumping, but I won't climb a ladder to go on the roof of my Bi-level. I've had to take a couple breaks from watching this movie. It makes my hands and feet sweat. LOL...maybe I have a problem with heights. |

@Cerebus3000 I have no plans to watch that. Stuff like that makes me extremely uncomfortable to watch. I'm weird when it comes to heights. Sometimes it bothers me and sometimes not. Flying or being in an enclosed area is no problem. Stuff like this really bothers me. | ||

Quote:Originally Posted by Davethebrave I also watched Wakanda Forever on streaming. I would say the plus was that the actress taking over the Black Panther role has the charisma and screen presence to pull it off. I would not say the same for the Riri actress potentially replacing Robert Downey Jr. Even worse, I think the Namor character was poorly cast and is completely lacking in charisma. Comic book Namor was a prince and had a regal quality to him. He had gravitas that this character was lacking. I did like the Vibranium-based origins of the undersea people. Also liked the explanation that the name "N'amor" is the absence of love. |

I watched it too. It wasnt bad but two things that stood out to me. 1.) I didn't like Namorfir much if the reasons @EbayMafia stated. 2.) Chadwick Boseman is hugely missed. C- |

Quote:Originally Posted by GAC Curmudgeon Mode engaged Yeah I'd basically agree but 1 thing that stands out more than others is that Prince Namor is being cast as a villain in the MCU when he should be one of the major heroes - albeit a slightly more anti-heroic one due to his #1 priority being Atlantis and not the "surface world" per se'. But this Namor is not the Namor I grew up with (I missed out on WWII Namor but was full on into him from about 1970) He has NONE of the positive aspects or personality and the whole meso-american thing - while academically interesting - is in the context of canon and comics complete B.S. They needed to do Namor exactly like he was in the comics and instead they retconned & woke-ified him. |

Quote:Originally Posted by EbayMafia Didn’t find either Shuri or Riri actresses compelling. Not enough to carry a movie anyways. Thankfully they shared the burden widely (an editing issue though!). Neither matched Boseman. Thought the overall story carried the movie decently well, though lacked editing and some dialogue was forced. |
