Thanks. It still seems awfully vague with the exception of “amateur” mentioned in both definitions. I think I’ll mentally note it as an “independent magazine”.

A fan produced magazine. For example, if your were a member of a certain fish aficionado organization, the monthly publication received by you in a plain brown wrapper would be a fanzine. Published by regular Joe's, not affiliated with a publishing house, expressly for like minded individuals, i.e. fans.

In the early 80's my oldest brother, along with the two other biggest nerds in the high school, made a fanzine that lasted about 3 issues. Probably just a 100 copy print run that they got a couple local bookstores to offer for sale. It was printed on a hand-rolled coping machine that my dad picked up at an auction. My dad used to entertain himself by going to auctions and brought home some pretty interesting crap. My brother covered comic books in the fanzine, nerd number 2 covered D&D. Can't remember what nerd #3 contributed. Several years ago, I saw a copy of their fanzine (more like a pamphlet) for sale on Ebay for something like $1 plus shipping. Been trying to find it on Ebay again so I could buy it, but I've never come across it again.

Yeah, fair question. I don't know, I ask myself the same thing. I wasn't searching for it. I had forgotten it even existed, just came across it randomly in another search and was kind of stunned. As a kid all the unsold copies (which was almost all of them) were always around the house. So I had never really thought of it as something to buy.

Forgive the ignorance here from someone who hasn't had a book signed at a con in a very long time.

I have a comic I would like to get signed by two guests at the con in Dallas next weekend. I know CBCS will be there, but how do I get them to come witness the signatures? One guest is selling tickets for signatures (I bought one) the other is not.

I presume I need to prep a window bag (and for those who have done so, do you recommend painter tape around the cut-out window)?

I figured I'd get quicker responses here than from emailing customer service about it. Thanks!

For those interested I am going to try to start listing foreign edition comics in my ebay shop and see if there is a market.

It will be a slow start - so not that many listings for now

Here are some

You shouldn't need a window bag unless the con said to do it, or you want it.

When you get to the con you should find the CBCS booth and let them know you need a witness for your signatures. They should tell you how to handle the rest.

In my experience you just go the the booth and say you need a signature witness.

I think the purpose of the tape is for the signor to more clearly see the window where he/she is to sign. I, too, have not put tape and have had no issues.

The last time I did this, I first located where the artists I wanted were located at the convention, saw how long each line was, then went to the CBCS table. If the line was relatively short, the CBCS guy followed me and stayed, witnessed the signature, and then took possession of the book. If the line was long, they might give you their cell number and tell you to call when you were about 15 minutes from the front of the line. It also probably depends on how many witnesses they have available. Most of the time, they stand to the side while you are in line. But when I got Elvira’s signature, the guy waited in line with me so he could get her autograph too.

Appreciate it, everyone!

Going to the booth and saying I needed a signature was my working plan, but I just wanted to be sure they wouldn't say "Oh, well, you should have done X first."

Oh, one other thing - will they crack the CBCS slab it's currently in, or do I need to figure out how to do that?

They did for me in the past. Mostly because it was a CBCS yellow label and to maintain that, CBCS has to do it. Otherwise you can do it and have it ready in your window bag.

@CatCovers You can have them crack it if its NOT a yellow label, or you can do it yourself. If you never done it before, probably better to have them do it. If it *IS* a yellow label, you need to have them crack it. Also, go early to give them time to crack the slabs. Just my two cents

Bought lotto tickets and vagrant asks me fir money. I told him I'd give him a lotto ticket. He says if I dint win you giving me another one? I'm like no. He sees its a dollar scratch off and says I can't win nothing with that. I'm like it's free and I have no money

Are you asking why he would say that? Perhaps he has seen his hopes get trampled upon so many times that he has built up defenses against getting them. He may not allow himself the luxury of hoping or dreaming for anything beyond his basic needs. He'd probably rather have a dollar in his hand than the possibility of a million dollars with a scratch off in his hand. He's probably seen thousands of scratch offs in trash bins and gutters. More than likely, that's his reality.

@Jesse_O

I told him. I have no money. All I can offer you is a ticket. My point was that I'm trying to share with you something, even if it's not exactly what you want. Whether he believed me or not is his choice. Physically he was built. He was definitely capable of work and was in better physical shape than most athletes i see on tv. He was riding a bicycle. He definitely wasn't starving.

When I told him take or leave it, he took it, mumbled thank you scratched and tossed the ticket on ground. He didn't even read the instructions. Or put the ticket in trash cN less than 5 feet from him.

My thoughts are that if I was in his shoes. I would say thank you or no thank you. At least this person interacted with me instead of ignoring me like I was less than human.

But regardless of his reality, he had enough balls to ask for another ticket if the one he got was a losing ticket.

I honestly don't think he had any vices. If he did, he needs to get every vagrant on the same program.

He had no shirt but he was ripped. I'll be honest if I looked like that I'd have better self esteem about myself than I currently do.

@Retired_11B You haven't found the right lcs yet. Call it dumb luck but I've experienced two lcs that were great with regular collectors and both were on different continents. They both have one thing in common and that is they only sell vintage comics, no new books.

One shop back in Australia us collector ks would meet up every Saturday afternoon at the store talking about different comics, sports and politics while drinking coffee. And we all didn't collect the same vintage books or genres as well so there was a wealth of information I discovered with one collector whose main focus was on Australian printed comics with a focus of original content.

Then here in the States a little different with less collectors on a Saturday afternoon and they drink beer in the store which is kind of different for me to engage in.

And as regulars we're always buying books and at those kind of lcs that deal only in vintage books and have regular customers deals are to be had.

It's interesting seeing lcs that deal with just vintage books how they operate and the regular customers who meet up there that just collect vintage books.
