James Gunn talks about DC/Marvel crossover18667

You can't get good wood on the ball every time. HotKeyComics private msg quote post Address this user

Jamea Gunn has pretty much confirmed my own personal theory, that DC and Marvel are already working on a crossover.

I've predicted for several months now that phase 6 will end with a portal opening and Superman being on the other side, leading to phase 7-9 being the crossover saga. I also think that the recent mass of DC project cancelations was to get the DCU in line for the crossover and eliminate the stuff that didn't fit.

Or maybe James is talking out of his ass, but I know where my opinion falls.

The DC project cancellations had little to nothing to do with a grand universe plan.

It would make no sense. They didn’t hire the new leads until after those decisions were made. They certainly would not have plotted so much in advance and tie the hands of their new leadership.

The cancellations were due to a change in strategy to focus on films and not questionable mass-produced, lower-quality content for streaming.

They took the write downs now seeing no incremental value in the future from those investments, no further burden to sustain those investments, tax benefits, and freeing capital for movie spend.

We need more crossovers. A Marvel vs DC crossover, a 16 film adaptation of X-Men and Teen Titans, a six season arc of Archie Meets the Punisher. How could it go wrong?

Then why weren't any of Gunn's projects scrapped? just coincidence?
🤔

While I am not sure if an MCU/DCU crossover event is in the works at this time...I will say, if the people involved believe a ton of money can be made then I'm certain a discussion will atleast be considered. Money is why any of this happens anyway.

Yes, clearly unrelated. A quick glance at the list would say as much…

if the CW Flash is involved; anything can happen. How many timelines did he screw up messing with the speed force trying to “fix” things?

I might be in the minority on this, but I'm down! I loved the crossover comics as a kid. After the disappointing movies that I've seen lately, I do in fact see potential in exploring new territory. Of course success depends on a great story-line and director.

Marvel has such a big perception advantage in the cinema market currently. It’s hard for me to imagine them doing a collaboration that might equate the two brands. Doesn’t seem wise from a competitive standpoint. That could change with time though. I do think it’s a good strategic move by Gunn to get that conversation into the public arena.

While I completely agree, hope springs eternal.

They got Spider-Man to work out pretty well. Maybe 20 years from now Disney will make DC movies.

I agree that Marvel has a perception advantage in the marketplace and I'm sure they are aware of this too. I would bet that if this crossover was to happen, Marvel would negotiate accordingly. Top billing, creative control and probably a split in revenues that favor Marvel and costs/financing that also favours Marvel. Marvel is aware that the crossover likely benefits DC more than Marvel but likely benefits the entire superhero movie marketplace as a whole. Marvel strikes me as an entity that enjoys "firsts". When they successfully created the larger MCU tie-ins, 22 intertwined movies, billions in revenues, licensing, etc...they seemed very proud of that (as they should..it was a monumental task). This seems like another challenge that they'd be into undertaking...assuming piles of money can be made.
