Mycomicshop sales history records as a tool to determine scarcity of comics18643

I don't believe any other dealer has bought & sold more comics than mycomicshop.com.

Milehighcomics wpuld be somewhat close in inventory size but they certainly do not sell books with the frequency that MCS does; just look at the ridiculously high pricing on.milehigh for virtually any pre-1980 book.

I recently bought a golden age war promotional comic from mycomicshop and had the book reserved for consignment, when i placed the order.

The GA war promo book is Adventure I My Career #0 (no number, Street and Smith 1945 1 shot).

Art from this book was swiped by Roy Lichtenstein for "Mr. Bellamy", a 1961 work of his.

Upon settijg the price for this book, I saw that oyher than the very same GD 2.0 copy I purchased, there have bee zero other copies sold by mycomicshop.

When setting consignment prices at Mycomicshop, mycomicshop shows mycomicshop's sales history of the guven book to qid the xonsigbor in pricing the book, as well as GPA records.

These records cover sales made in auction and directly purchased from mycomicshop.com,via BIN or best offer, as well as the item's mirrored listing sale price, if the item was purchased on eBay.

I'll follow up in a subsequent post wity a screenshot of the sales history record of the book i referenced above, and links detailing the Lichtenstein source swipe details.

For now, I'm curios what others think of using this tool as a metric of scarcity.

I'm interested in seeing MCS sales history. How far back does it go?

Not that useful to measure scarcity.

Higher price books will transact more frequently at equiv scarcity.

Well, their sales history is only currently viewable if you are consigning the book in question with them.

I do not know how far back it goes, but on other books I consigned with them, I have seen sales from as far back as the early 2000's, IIRC.

@Steveborock may know the answer to this question.

If not, Este at mcs would be able to say, if one were to email her that question.

And @davethebrave ,mycomicshop certainly deals in higher priced books, like ASM 1, AF 15, Timely Cap's etc etc...so I'm really not sure what you are saying here.

If you find a book that is on auction, they usually have their sales data listed also.

@ComicHoarder

Oh, they sell big $ books?

Didn’t realize that.

Edit: okay, okay, I’ll explain. I assume point of mentioning MCS as scarcity source is measuring scarcity in a more accurate way than census data. If so, the approach is flawed because of what I note above. It won’t be a more accurate measure of true scarcity. It is another data point, sure. But it will likely be less accurate than combining census data with other data (eg absolute value).

Correct, my cell's battery was dying when I created the first post in this thread- didn't have time to note this.

And it's not "usually"...every comic book auction (single issues, not lots) has MCS's sales history of any given item in auction.

@mycomicshop posted in the CGC forums thread titled "our recent experience with consigning books thru mycomicshop" (paraphrased) in which they posted that they are working on getting sales history of each book on their site being shown in it's respective listing on mcs.

@mycomicshop also posted in that thread that they are working on allowing customers with mycomicshop accounts to purchase a book(s) on their site and have it held for combined shipping intil the buyer wishes the books to be shipped out in one order. At that time, the buyer would pay for shipping the held / paid up books.

I can hardly wait for that latter rollout on MCS, I can't tell you how many times I missed put on buying books for like $3 or so, because I didn't want to eat $7 or so in shipping for just the one or 2 books.

FWIW, it was @flyingdonut who sparked this idea for me, in a post on the cgc forums.

Dan has been a convention & eBay dealer for a looong time.

Per his board signature, he was the first person to sell a CGC graded book on eBay, fwiw.

Here's the comment of Dan's I'm referring to, from.this first thread:

Here's another bit of feedback from Dan regarding selling volume , which should show anyone my words on his experience are correct.

Ahhhh....just remembered something else about mycomicshop sales history data.

Thanks for reminding me @jesse_o ...

You can search mycomicshop's sold auctions prices on their site.

Not sure offhand how far they let you look, but it can be done easily in a minute or 2 by clicking on their completed auctions, and searching from there.

I'm not suggesting mcs sales history data on books is all conclusive, but I don't know of any comic dealers as big as mycomicshop.

CGC and CBCS census data isn't much of an indicator on rarity, but it's helpful to some degree.

Ebay sold/completed lostings as well, though that's only good for like 2 months worth of listing history.

Pricexharting.com is another tool but they miss a lot of eBay sold prices...they go back at least a year, or more, but some sales are missed and some titles don't even show up in a search.

Watchcount.com is another but again, it has a limited window of records , I think just 60 days worth.
