So last night around 1am I made a trip to the dark side forums and was reading about Shaken Comic Syndrome and of course got me paranoid so I looked at most of my slabs this morning and I think I'm in the clear but I did notice a few of my books seem to have shifted or are off center. I'm showing a couple of photos but can anyone explain in a not so technical term what causes this or if I need to be worried about the books long term getting damaged? I have a photo of one of the worst offenders right now (Elvira's House of Mystery #1) and showing a photo of the staple. Sorry if this was already discussed. I did a search but I might not have been using the correct terms without my caffeine kicking in yet. P.S. feel free to tell me I'm just being paranoid from my trip to the dark side forums. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Cgc slabs happens all the time. I’ve seen damaged corners from it. Be careful from shipping or moving around too roughly.

Yeah you’re being paranoid. That book don’t look like it’s damaged. It always happens to the corners and these look fine . Plus I’ve never seen It on CBCS books only CGC. |

That book does not have SCS. Comic books don't always fold in to neat little rectangles. In fact, flushness can be a telltale sign of trimming.

I do remember another type of SCS where the front and back covers were held in place by the slab and/or inner well and the inside pages were thrust forward causing tears at the staples.

Thank you all! I think I need to stop venturing over to the dark side message boards before I convince myself my collection will spontaneously combust lol

@bennyb86 Doesnt appear to be SCS, as the EHOM #1 is a king sized copper book with a standard cover, so slight page fanning will be present on virtually all unpressed copies , and even some pressed copies, of that book. As it's a giant sizer, there tends to be more staple wear...looks like your copy has what may be a SCS tear right above the top staple on the FC but I can't een tell if what I'm looking at there is a tear, in your pics. Probably just normal wear on that book....but not if it's in a higher grade CBCSslab and I can't see the grade CBCS gave that book. That said, you/other posters in general, need to post up a full pic of the FC and a full pic of the BC, when asking about defects in order to get more informed replies. |

One of the worst cases of SCS I’ve seen and on a 9.8 book that’s pretty expensive book… happened in shipping- was well packed but I figure the carrier shaking it there is nothing inside to keep the book from shifting within the inner well soooo…. You can see pretty well the shift there at the top right of the front of the book- meh. So keep in mind you can pack all the bubble wrap you want if the carrier handles it bad enough the book inside absolutely can shift on its own. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
