Steve McNiven - Just how popular is he?18608

So, looking at “the other guys”, they have a incredibly expensive cover sketch commission being offered by Steve McNiven.

“ Full Figure Sketch with Color (Limited to the first submitter only) - $3075”

I mean… 3k? For someone not Frank Miller or Todd McFarlane? Am I missing something here? And I would consider myself a noob, as I’ve only been into collecting comics for a few years, so I don’t know what I don’t know. I can admit that. 😁

Steve McNiven does some very nice stuff and he's done really sweet cover art, but I'm with you. 3k+!!!???

That's the money you pay one of those rare artists whose name is actually known outside collecting fandom, like Frank Miller, Todd McFarlane, Jim Lee.

Yeah.... 100% not worth it

near as I can tell you could probably buy every book he ever worked on for less than that!!

The most recent Moon Knight series has McNiven covers on at least some of the non-variant early issues. On #1 for sure. I believe he was also on Captain America during Civil War, and that's how he became more well-known. Not $3k+ worth of well-known, though.

Even Clayton Crain before the drama wasn't worth $3,075, much less Steve McNiven.

The $3K is a one-shot so they're fishing for a single customer to pay that and hedging that as a one-off someone might consider it worth it.

You can find McNiven covers on New Avengers and Ultimate X-Men from the mid to late 2000's, that's where I first noticed him. Decent enough artist, but IMO definitely not 3k worth.

That's almost certainly what's going on. Chances are they'll find someone crazy enough to do it, too.

Exactly. I like his stuff and he can come up with some pretty nice covers, but no way am I paying The Monster Bucks for some original art from him!

Maybe he charges 3k so he won’t be bothered with 50 requests a day?

To be fair....if you're inundated with overwhelming business volume you must consider that you're charging too little.

Also did the "Old Man Logan" run in Wolverine with Millar:

But I agree, $3k sounds crazy high.

McNiven recently took down his published art for sale and is from here on out keeping everything he publishes so it has created an increase in his art that is already out there. I also wouldn't pay $3k for a commission from him but it is what it is. I recently purchased a prelim of one of his covers and it was very expensive for a recent prelim but it is what it is.

McNiven has done a lot of work. Besides what's already been mentioned he also worked on New Avengers and Captain America.

Most recently he did some Star Wars work, I believe it was the War of the Bounty Hunters prequel one-shot and some related covers. I personally have enjoyed his work, however for $3K, I would have rather gotten that Heath Ledger Joker piece that Bill Sienkiewicz did recently that sold to a collector at NYCC.
