Overlooked Sexual Innuendo Cover & Panel Book Listing Thread18592

I have not set up at a con since 2029. PolarisNuclearSS2020 private msg quote post Address this user
Virtually everyone is aware of innuendo cover books like Betty and Me #16 , Archie #511, and a dozen or so others from Archie titles alone...but there are a handful of lesser known innuendo books I am aware of that don't yet get the respect that they deserve.

This thread is intended to spotlight these books.

So if you know of such a book, or even more than one book you feel is flying under the radar, feel free to post up a cover pic (or interior panel) in this thread.

I'll go first with my top pick; Blondie #207.

Tossed salad cover

Note:
(See my edit to this post below for the social relevance of Blondie #207 within American pop culture, particularly for the LGBT communities.)

AFAIK, this is the only Blondie comic with an innuendo cover or panel....seems it has room to grow in realized FMV sale prices.

Edit:

Following up on a comment from @EbayMafia below,a Google search under "toss a salad slang era" and "beat off slang era" shows that the former first came into popularity amongst the LGBT communities in the early 1970.

A sexual innuendo cover which has its' origins specifically
within the LGBT communities, seems like a pretty significant 🔑 innuendo book with untapped potential to move up in FMV.

Notoriety/novelty of a double entrede used on a seemingly "wholesome" children's comic book character like Archie and Betty, is what largely made Betty and Me #16 into the most wanted innuendo book, along with Rifleman #10,

Blondie & Dagwood are characters in that very sane vein; seemingly "wholesome" , "all american " AAAAND an iconic portable of the "normal nuclear family", to boot!

To have "toss a salad", a phrase originating from within the LGBT communities, used between such a straight laced heterosexual couple .....is what I would call a double shock of an innuendo book.

I say this as Blondie #207 is a 1970's book, and the earliest known documentation of 'toss a salad" appears to be in a 1979's gay documentary film, per the screenshots below.

The latter "beat off" phrase apparently preceded "toss a salad" by coming into the *North American lexicon in the "1960's".

Neither of these dates are indicative of when either of these two phrases were being first used; just first recorded in the public record.

But given the social implications of being part of the LGBT communities and openly flaunting so by using any such slang terms to describe annilingus (a sexual act primarily practed by LGBT communities, would not be looked upon as tolerable by society writ large intil the 2000's.

The 1960's, moreso the mid/later 1960's is when "women's liberation", "free love" became a social phenomenon in the 🇺🇸.

Attitudes towards such things as masturbation, and sex in general were pretty much kept under the sheets or conservative pre-1960's.

The social acceptance amongst society as a whole towards those in the LGBT communities did not improve along with the "progressive" changes of the 1960's around heterosexual sexuality.

This is readily apparent in the reactionary position of "only gays get AIDS" during the 1980's AIDS epidemic.

Same sex marriage laws barring bigotry were put forth on the books during Obama's first presidential term.

So that said, one can extrapolate from social attitudes that "toss a sald" has been around for as long as "beat off" has been around, it was just more repressed.

*
Another Google search shows a discussion board in which virtually every reply from British people stated that "beat off" isn't one of the common slang used in the 🇬🇧 for masturbation.

Posters seemed to all say it is of 🇺🇸 origin.

I was wholly unaware of when these two slang phrases came into being when I started this thread yesterday.

Thanks to @EbayMafia for pushing me to research this.

I don’t understand the innuendo, here. But Archie books are like 75% innuendo or “sexy” covers. I never understood the crazy prices on them.

Given the era of the book and lack of visual support, I'm going to guess that Blondie cover is accidental innuendo that only came about with the passage of time. Not even innuendo really. Just a change in the meaning words over time.
I'll stay with the thread until the Rifleman cover gets posted here for the 57th time.

Why do I feel that pointing out overlooked covers would do nothing but cut down the odds of finding books that I've been hunting for years?

There's the 'seal-molester' ALF #48 cover. That one got recalled, so finding one is already a drag.

The 'spider-spunk' Spider-Punk #2 cover. I have no idea how that one got by. It's so obvious.

I figure there is very little chance of me finding that ALF comic at a price I can afford. So, when I saw this one on the preorder list a few months ago, I had to order it!!!!

Interesting covers, I do have a tendency myself in picking up just plain wrong covers. Some are worse then others.

A quick example

One could say the very same thing for Betty and Me #16 as you've put forth about Blondie #207.

Can you explain how Blondie 207 differs from B & M #16, except for the latter selling for multiples more than the former?

I'd say it's primatily due to established notoriety over time.

The Blondie book is just an innuendo book I'm aware of due to posts on the CHC Forum from a couple years back.

Compared side to side, there's little difference between the two double entredes' in play between "beat off" and toss a salad".

I think this Archie is one of the blatantly obvious ones. Not exactly cheap though it is a early Archie. Picked this book off of Figment 👍

I think "toss a salad" is a more modern euphemism and the book pre-dates the sexual meaning...I'm just guessing though.

I always thought that "tossing a salad" was a metaphor used for throwing up. And a "salad shooter" is a vegan with diarrhea.

I don't know anymore. I can't keep up with the changes. LOL
