Apologies if this has been asked before as I'm new here. Does CBCS utilize a standard .5 grade to books that have a clean cut half page taken out (including the MVS and doesn't effect the story)to an otherwise complete 3.5-4.0 book?

Yes, you'd get a 0.5 incomplete.

Thanks figment. Not sure I understand this logic on their end as by their own grading definition coupons and panels can be cut out and still be graded as a 1.0-1.5. This could be huge on a high dollar book so I was wondering if anyone has dealt with this before.

Ive asked them directly on the digital code sticker. Have a Amazing spider-man #4 (first appearance of Silk) without the sticker. as had used it. they said it takes .2 pts off. I was fine as if I get a 9.4. know what it wouldve been with sticker. BUt good to now with stuff like mvs. also welcome |

A missing MVS that does not affect the story is not an automatic CBCS .5. There are a variety of factors that can come into play, but the grade should top out at 3.5 max.

Thanks again everyone. GanaSoth...was there any other mention of defects to your book in the graders notes?

@Sm810 Other defects other than the missing MVS will give you a lower grade. As @SteveRicketts said, it would go from 3.5 then down from there, depending on other defects.

There is an option (elsewhere) to get a more accurate grade on the remainder of the book. It would just have a green label stating the MVS was missing. If it's the whole page, then the 3.5 is probably accurate enough. |

Thanks again everyone...I'm still struggling with CBCS's own grading standards of having panels and coupons cut out of books and still receiving a 1.0-1.5. Are there gradients of "incomplete"? Seems like you shouldn't get dinged that much more if there's only slightly more missing on the same page as the MVS. GanaSoth's example above may be a sample of this as I'd be interested in what thier perceived grade of that book would have been if the MVS was intact.

Quote:Originally Posted by GACI was using Batman 15 as an example but yes you are correct. Instead it will say cover reattach with tape and get a blue label. You could possibly tape the Aquaman cover back to the book and get a .5 bump. I don't know. I just collect comic books. I'm not a grader or dealer |

@GAC I think we have both shown inconsistencies in grading. Another thing. Who do you think gets a better grade from these companies. You or Me? Probably a big shot dealer that sends thousands of books would be my guess. You may get a .5 bump on an Amazing Fantasy 15 if you were. I know I won't

But, for the most part I reject conspiracy theories. I don't believe this is a systemic problem but that being said it would be nearly impossible to prove. Unless there is secret recording surveillance explicitly depicting fraud then it's too easy to say "human error, we over graded". I have to believe fraud is not rampant otherwise why the heck am I still involved in this hobby? We have to go by data that can be proven, not isolated, anecdotal examples. From the outside looking in, it seems, "yeah, they (grading company) can totally do this"...and with ease it seems, but to think the entire industry or even just the major player is systematically corrupt...eesh! That's a chilling thought and if I believed that for even a moment, I would immediately sell my entire collection....but ofcourse I don't know for certain. |
