8 Months ago @Jprez111 posted a question about grading their Wolverine 8. Link to previous post

I submitted my copy and asked the forum for a grade check, I was hoping to get a NM grade, here is the grade I received for my Wolverine 8.

@BrianGreensnips grade notes were very close to the CBCS Grader notes. See below.

@BrianGreensnips Grade notes
Scratch and color break back cover,
Slight color rub back cover on the spine side,
Bottom left corner slightly blunted.

CBCS Grader Notes:
spine stress front & back cover breaks color
tiny color rubs along spine front & back cover
light surface wear front & back cover

Very Happy with Grade.

Do you think it should have been a 9.4 instead of 9.6?

That's awesome! It sounds like a few allowable defects with the colour-breaking defect keeping it from being a 9.8. If the colour rubs were judged to be a manufacturing defect and not due to handling, that might explain why it's not a 9.4.

How do I know this? Because I've done it myself. lawguy1977 private msg quote post Address this user

Yes, I did press it. Took over a year to get it back.

I'm surprised it's not a 9.0 or less, with colour breaking.

A single colour break would have to be pretty dramatic to knock a book all the way down to a 9.0

Huh?

It's a 9.6, all day.

I don't see a single spine tick on the FC...granted, the glare from the pic prevents a clear view of about 1/4 of the spine, towards the bottom....but the spine has a black border and the background color is a light navy blue so color breaking spine ticks should be visible even with the glare on the bottom of the spine.

The spine, and 4 corners are the first thing to look at when looking over high grade moderns for 9.8 candidates.

The CBCS graders notes are in line with a conservative 9.6 from CBCS or CGC.

No kidding. I have seen 9.8s from the cgc with up to three small color breaks along the spine.

Color breaking and 9.8 don't go together, sorry.

When I was grading moderns.

A 9.8 can have one to two spine ticks along the spine.
When you run your eye along the spine.
And with those defects all four corners have to be razor sharp.

One not so razor sharp corner and two spine ticks along the spine is a instant 9.6.

That was the grading standards I helped set up for Halo.

Remember to always, always buy the book, never the grade.

9.8s with color breaking spine creases.
I've got 9.6 silver age with no color breaking spines. But then again I bought the book. And was happy with the grade
