I saw someone who is very knowledgeable about comics say in his video that 8.0 is mid grade. I know I've been collecting since the 80s and a lot has changed, but did I miss a meeting? |

I don't know if I qualify as very knowledgeable but I am of the belief that 8.0 is the start of the high grade portion of the grading spectrum.

We'll, mathematically 4.0-6.0 would be mid-grade, but since most collectors don't really collect much below 4.0 (maybe 3.0?) I could hear "bumping" mid-grade to 5.0-7.0. To me 7.5 and up is high grade. |

My mentality is that roughly 4-7.5 (so VG to F/VF) is mid-grade and 8 and up being high grade (VF and up) which leaves low grade as 3.5 and below (PR to GD/VG). But I also don't consider myself very knowledgable

I really do not believe that we should assume that given 3 levels -- low, middle and high -- that the formula is split into three equal parts (.5-3.5, 4.0-6.5 and 7.0 - 10.0) mostly due to the exponential factor seen.

Expectations for moderns being in better condition might skew someone to consider 8.0 mid grade if they are are not considering older books.

For some a Mercedes is a high end car. On the other hand, there are people who wouldn't be caught dead in anything less than a Rolls Royce or a Bentley. It's all relative. So it depends on your point of view, your preference, and your pocket book. Personally, mid-grade is a useless term for me because I don't like buying anything less than a 9.2 for raw books and 9.8 for slabbed.

I've never been a fan of just saying a book is high , Mid or low grade. These mean different things for different collectors.

I think they must be talking about moderns. for me: modern mid is 8.5. 70-80s take a full point off "7.5 60s full point off 6.5 40-50s around 5.0 if older, anything is good if displayable and complete. |

It's hard because a modern that is sitting at or above an 8.0 is really hard to sell when you could just get a 9.8 or a 9.6 instead for a few bucks more, right? That's what's going on with me on this book right here:![]() |

Actually, from what I can tell, he doesn't collect anything newer than 1980.

A 8.0 for some silver age Big Five DC war books would be considered super high grade. Check out the first appearance of SGT. Rock in Our Army at War 83 on the CGC census. 8.0 is not mid grade on that book it's the second highest graded.

8.0 for a modern collector is bird cage liner, even copper I wouldn't waste a minute with them. For GA it's HG, for SA its lower HG.
