@flanders
The only classic UK punk band I've seen in concert is the Damned. I have seen similar era US punk bands/performers like Blondie and Joan Jett (both amazing live).

Same. Blown away every time, too. After seeing him, I stare at my guitar for 2 weeks blaming it for me not practicing. LOL!

Richard Thompson is the world's best kept guitar virtuoso secret. I hope he remains that way.

I’m guessing you don’t know the name of the world’s best kept guitar virtuoso secret. Just a guess.

Also, why would you hope he remains that way?

No arena concerts were you can't see the band up close or hear the music as well!

I saw Blondie and Joan back in their prime when I lived in NYC, only in small venues. Great bands!

Most of the big guitar virtuosos I know of are playing mostly club gigs nowadays (unless they’re playing in Japan).

In 4th grade, my very first concert was at San Diego Stadium, 1977, Blue Oyster Cult, Cheap Trick, Pat Travers and UFO, I was the only kid on the field, being offered bota bags of alcohol, and weed. To my astonishment, every band was amazing and fun, UfO was out of this world, Cheap trick was fun as hell, Pat Travers was just awesome, but when I heard the sound of Godzilla's roar, it was dark, I lost my mind, it was badassery! In 1982, I was fortunate enough to have an uncle and an aunt fairly close in age to me. The took me to the US Festival, the line-up for all 3 days was just fantastic, The Ramones, The Police, Oingo Boingo, Gang of Four, Tom Petty, Pat Benatar just to mention a few. I ran rampant the whole time, checking out many things like the small computer show they had on display, all the dealers walking around with cardboard signs offering all kinds of drugs. My aunt and uncle didn't see me these 3 days or hear me arrive at the tent until around 2 am in the morning, all days, and they wondered if I was high or drunk. From 1982 until now, I try and see as many bands as possible, old, new, and bands that I missed. As a proud parent of youngsters, I was happy to take 3 out of my 4 boys to their first concerts, Knottfest 2015 and 2016, same place, and we went all 3 days, we didn't camp out, we rented a hotel room each time for the entire festival.

That sounds amazing! I love live music so my sister and I try to go to at least a concert or two every year. I'm always on the lookout for who's showing up at our local venues. I don't do much of the festival circuit, unfortunately, because I'm not at my best when a crowd is that size. Smaller crowds are fine - no problem there - but the really big ones are hard to take.

Let's all play nice....

Actually, thinking about it....At Thompsons age, I hope he is no longer a secret as he has given me so much joy that I hope, one day, he gets the credit he deserves by the masses (wishful thinking, I know) and not just his fans, many amazing musicians and he is also the critics darling.

Let's share him with as many music fans as we can!

It's amazing the way he plays solo guitar! You can hear some bass while he is still playing rhythm and lead, all the while singing! Great voice as well, always in key. He also writes the music and lyrics to his songs. (Back in the day, Linda Thomposon had some influence). He is also a very smart and witty entertainer.

Here is one of my favorite tributes by the AMAZING David Gilmour:

Here is Richard doing an acoustic tune that IMHO is amazing and, if you pay attention to the lyrics, very sad and funny at the same time (about 1 minute of talking at the beginning):

I'm always slow to pick up on lyrics because I'm so used to listening to music that's not in English. I can usually get it on the second or third time, though!

I'm noticing he really knows what he's doing. Check out how he draws away from the mic to get a nice fade, and then closes the distance to strengthen his voice. That's how it's done without freakin' autotune!! Go, Richard Thompson!!!

I always thought that Elvis Costello was a fantastic guitarist, not among the top players, but because he is the BEST lyrist since Dylan, his playing gets over looked.

His playing here might not be as great as his 1990's guitar playing but it's so raw, powerful and the right time (late 70's) in this vid that I could not help but to share it....

Elvis Costello is a fantastic musician and I agree that he is one of the best and most poetic lyricists aside from Bob Dylan (who I have had the pleasure of seeing in concert). What a shame that his career got side railed for So Long due to him not being able to hold his liquor and saying some utterly unacceptable things. Imagine what a great career he could have had if that hadn't happened.

@Byrdibyrd Yeah, he has always been his own person, for good or bad, but his music and especially his lyrics are amazing! I am so old that I was lucky enough to see him about 40 times. Will still try and see him more, but now that I live in the Dallas area, it's not easy. Such a very conservitave state that most muscians pick Austin over Dallas, bummer for me!

Cool story: When Dead & Company was going to play Dallas last year(?)they almost pulled out but did not want to dissapoint the fans. So....Weir came out with a giant sign that read "In Texas, the Covid virius has more reproductive rights than women do."

Weir says it like it is, and he doesn't care where he's at! Good for him! What a shame that it's so, so true.

I have never had the pleasure of seeing Elvis Costello live, but if he comes around here, I'll be changing that!

@Byrdibyrd I got lucky living in NY, NYC and NJ for so long that I was lucky enough to see some many great concerts. I had also been flying out to CA since the late 70's to see the Grateful Dead runs every New Years. So many great nights with music and friends!

Hope you get the see EC one day!

Speaking of NYC, I used to frequent The Stone. Highly recommend to anyone open to different musical flavors. Speaking of flavors, no drinks or food served there. Was also the first date spot with my wife! Bold move going to a no-drinks venue?

As for unknown music/players, music is like good food, even better when shared. Also, many great artists struggle and even the semi-famous often barely eke out a living.
