I have no idea if this is a "record" sale for this issue in this grade but man. In 2020-2021, it struggled to make an average of a $900 sale. It illustrates to me fads will come and go, but a "key" will always be a key

It’s a great, iconic cover. Combine with the character arcs… and it will be a long term sought after representation of comics generally.

Iconic.
I miss when artists created original art related to the stories.

Today's artists all seem to copy the legends. Literally.

Since Neal Adams' unfortunate passing, SS on this book are/have seen a healthy bump in value in particular. Unsigned copies of typical Adams Bat books and so forth have remained more or less static. The "keys" are seeing a lot of growth signed or unsigned.

Lots of "homages", I will say. Alex Ross shot me in the face when I 1st read "Kingdom Come". I'm unfamiliar with a lot of the art production techniques used in moderns today. A lot of it seems computer generated.

Gabriele Del Otto is another favorite. Seems he only does covers.

Here's a favorite Bat 251 "homage" cover. Only 300 printed and still easy to purchase:

Agree on Ross.

I'm also guilty of buying some of this homage crap, but only if I like it. That said, I'd boycott it if I thought it would change things.

Heritage has a copy of the book prominently displayed during their auctions and it gets similar visibility (there) as legendary books.

I have a 9.4-9.6 candidate but won’t submit anywhere in today’s state of service and competence.

The Vampironica #4 variant is the only homage cover I have. Not a fan of homages. No, I have a Bat 227, so 2 homages.

I bought the Bat 251 replica signed by Adams as I can't touch an original 251 high grade signed. So, I have the signed replica and my own graded 9.0 original.

Homages just leave me feeling cold.

And I find a difference between homages and "nods". One of life's great mysteries is why Batman #9 (1940) has not been designated a classic cover. That cover has had hundreds of "nods" and tribute covers but none of them ever felt like an homage.
