What's your monthly spend for new comic books?18421

I don't buy new books, but I picked up a copy of the latest "Previews" magazine (approx. 600 pages!) and there is a whole lot of new stuff out there to choose from each month! At about 4 bucks apiece, that could really add up. Just curious, for those who buy new comics...about how much do you spend each month?

I'd like to say I still turned out alright, but that would be a lie. flanders private msg quote post Address this user
It's been as high as $160 (I must have lost my mind around January 7th 2022) and more recently, I've been spending around $30 a month. Ideally I'd spend nothing since I have hundreds of new books sitting around and I can't even remember what they are. I'd be lucky if they're even worth cover price. Maybe it's time for me to get more organized. Here's some pics of the January order:

If I were to go back in time I would've purchased all of the titles starting with "S" and skipped everything else.

I spend $0 on new comic typically. However I did buy the Overstreet’s Lost Universe’s earlier this year. It sang to me.

@Scifinator I would imagine that was something you would really enjoy. By the way, for $5, the 600 page PREVIEWS catalog is pretty good perusing when you have nothing better to do.

These days, about $50 a month. 10-15 years ago, I was spending $120+ a week. But I got a 20 percent discount off of cover price back then.

When I was a kid I couldn’t afford to regularly buy books off the rack. Spent lots of time in the local comic shop but only bought books sporadically. Bought the odd back issue but of course with no budget, a big purchase was $8 for an early CA book… this was in the late 80s through mid-90s for me.

Did dollar bin purchases as well (I think 25 cents at the time?) At some point I traded many away for other collectibles.

I still balk at cover price for new books.

Just attempted to buy a bunch of newer books but UPS seems to have lost them. Serves me right.

So my monthly spend on newish books this month is about $70 but will likely be refunded back to $0, right where it has been for years.

Through sub service at MCS $30-$50 a month depending on how many variants I select for all Spawn titles, SIKTC, Slaughter house, Hulk, and the soon to end BRZRKR.

I get pretty much all the X-Men titles, plus a couple other things, so my subscription bill is usually uncanny, sometimes amazing, and occasionally extraordinary.

Haven’t bought new comics in years. I did spend over $800.00 on 2 magic apparatus over the weekend. They were added to my ever growing block penetration themed collection.

Probably about $90/month. Where it escalates is when titles like ASM and Venom would have other titles, like Venom: Lethal Protector or crossovers. My LCS has its heyday. It’s all good though, been going to them for years and they usually know what I like reading and collecting. The only constraint is that I am starting to run into space issues, so I may have to curtail it at some point.

That used to be me (or its equivalent some years ago - around $200 ~ 250/month), and it's a big part of the reason I gave it up. If I'd been able to keep up financially, I probably would have kept going. It's just a matter of what your wallet can handle. Nothing to be embarrassed about as long as the bills are still getting paid.

Pretty much why I cut back to near zero a few years ago. Space was at a premium, and my wife and I had a baby, so there wasn't as much time or money for things like comic books. We kept a couple subs (my wife has been getting Saga since the first solicit), but just a couple.

Now that the boy has started "real school," there's a little more time. So I started subbing again. Mostly limiteds, so I have a definite-ish end date. But a few ongoings, too. I'm enjoying the current runs on Ghost Rider, She Hulk, and Grim. Best thing about having more time is going back through the boxes of books I bought when I ran out of time to read but was still spending money. I found I had Captain Marvel #14, Darth Vader #3, etc. Now I just need to find my Ultimate Fallout #4! I've found 1, 3, 5 and 6, so I know that thing is in there somewhere. But long boxes are heavy!

You can get 35% off of new comics at Mycomicshop.com, I don't buy new comics personally, but I would never buy new comics at retail as there are many businesses out there that offer pretty decent discounts for new comics. Even Mile High comics offers a deep subscription discount.

@James42, that is why I started using Comic Connect, it makes it so much easier to search for a book.

@sportshort I like my LCS. I have been going there for (takes shoes off to count) twenty years or so. I have been there for the baptism of all three of the owner's children. It's where I met my wife. I don't mind paying retail to keep a shop like that open.

@zdoes10 I used ComicBase for years to keep track of things, but when we got pregnant the time I used to input data went away along with the time to read. I'm getting back on track these days, but I'm having to go through a lot of back catalog. I used to buy half the Marvel line, pretty much. And a quarter of DC. Plus smaller publishers. I'm finally down under 5 long boxes left to go, but they are packed solid end to end without bags and boards. It's a lot of books.

Your LCS sounds pretty awesome. On those occasions when I feel the need to buy something new, I go to our LCS. I see no reason not to spend just a bit extra to help keep one of our local merchants going. Plus, whenever he buys a collection (doesn't happen often, sadly) he'll hold anything I'm interested in behind the counter for me. That's how I got to a couple of nice Detectives before the crowd even got to see them.

I'm working on it. But it's a ton of books. Managing about 200/week into bags and boards, alphabetized, and entered into my database.
