Great Canadian Grading GCG18214

Doodoo doodoo! Mind blowing stuff, right? Caffeine_Kid private msg quote post Address this user
Looks like a grading service has started up in Canada. Will be a pretty tough go to break into this business. They are havinq their first graded comic auction. The auction house and the grading company have the same street address. Interesting.

I think a grading company in Canada is a great idea. The labels look very nice and there are a lot of cool books listed. I'm pretty tempted!

Here’s their website

Great Canadian Grading

The website and product definitely come off as more professional than say ECG, though I wish their site had a bit more information (staff, experience, etc). They also charge for grader’s notes which I think we can say is non-standard now

It's a good idea...too bad CBCS wasn't able to provide in country service...

Main problem with all new companies is resale values....CGC and CBCS are the top 2..PGX has been around longer than CBCS but when major auction houses won't carry your books that kind of knee caps you.

Will auction houses sell GCG? I doubt it...so that leaves you basically grading modern variant crap..which there is a massive market for..just not for me

That company name though… GCG? They tried for that one.

Slimy.

They did that to either a) confuse b) manipulate keyword search results, or both.

Either way, not a great way to build credibility in a credibility-credibility-credibility-driven market.

If they grade and sell their own books, then can you really rely on the grades? The cgc and Heritage do it, so the more the merrier, I suppose.

I could see CGC taking issue with the initials. Notably not the same, but could cause confusion amongst newer collectors.

They definitely need more detail on their website (30 day TAT for cards doesn't always translate into 30-day TAT for comics), but it looks like they offer some potentially nice services, including pressing. Charging for grader's notes is not the best sign, though. Even CGC gave up on that one.

Interested. But. How do we submit. Don’t see submission forms? They say they verify sig. but what’s the cost. Is it 25$ for all books, no matter the year published? Are they reliable
Website is nice but not very informative. Would love to send my books to a company in CANADA but I find there’s still lots of information missing. Will keep a close eye on this

A Canadian company grading books…great idea…sad how they graded some Canadian Price variants and missed placing it on the label.
Due diligence is crucial when grading a book.
Grading is still subjective until a real company uses AI and not human graders in my opinion

That's an issue if they don't put U.S. price variant on U.S. editions instead. It is a Canadian grading company after all.

PS: I suspect you're correct, and if so... Ouch!

They definitely don't note newsstand editions, but I'm pretty sure they do note CPV books. I sent a CPV book in for a signing recently and it was noted on the invoice that it was CPV.

I agree their site leaves much to be desired. As it sits, it comes across a bit like some amateurs taking a stab at trying it out.

If they can manage to not grade homebrew 'variant' covers as legit variants, then they have one up on some other company I can think of.

PGX used to be CGG and the cgc made them change. I'm sure they would do the same to GCG.

Just spent some more time checking out their site.

Issues that need to be fixed:

1) No way to submit anything. No link to submission process or to a submission form.

2) Contact Us form says "reach out to us with any comments or questions" but there is no field to type a comment or question into.

3) They don't provide an email address to contact them

4) There's a button to Sign Up but it does nothing.

5) There's a button to post an item. Doesn't do anything.

6) No company individuals named on the site.

7) They do have a street address, so you could write them a letter. But you have to look up the Postal Code elsewhere because they don't provide it.

8) They do coin grading and describe the case but the picture is of a slabbed comic.

9) Ditto for the Card Grading page.

They have a lot of work to do on their site if they want to be taken seriously.

Sounds like they launched the site before it was ready to go. I'm still interested in what they have to offer, but a lack of preparedness on that level is not the best sign.

It literally looks like a boutique store with some rental apartments above. I think it’s safe to say if you send your books there you will be waiting longer than CBCS. 😁

There is definitely something fishy going on. If you google canuckauctions.com you will find an address of 1726 Commercial Drive. However, if you look at the picture for the storefront the number on the door is 1303. Googling canuckauctions and 1303 shows an old yellow pages entry for this business. Looking at 1303 Commercial Drive on google maps does show this as a real storefront as of May 2019, but by December 2020 it was clearly for rent. Maybe they did just move and went online without a real store front.

Malwarebytes doesn't want to let me see the canuckauctions website.

Google reviews are pretty bad.

The kicker in all of it. The address shown on the GCG website just happens to be the same as the address for canuckauctions.

I am sure there is more stink on these two "businesses", but that is what I see right now.
