We all are aware we are in a hobby price correction. I’m hearing and reading a bunch of comments from sellers that they are starting to see a slow down in their sales (turns) too. With that in mind… 1) If you are selling or a seller are you seeing a slow down in your sales? 2) If you are seeing the slow down, what do you think is causing it? Are people waiting to see where the market is headed? Something else? |

Inflation...everything else costs more so there's less money available to spend on hobbies

I sent a number of things to MCS that have auctioned over the past 3 weeks. Some have gone lower than hoped but the total is about where I expected it. I think the lower prices depend a lot on what kind of comics you're looking at.

Funny, for the books I collect the prices haven’t dropped (not meaningfully at least). In some cases they’ve risen. Doesn’t mean I don’t expect some reductions. There are always dips. Don’t believe me - check out transacted prices for Action Comics 23 this year ($40k for a 6.5) vs history. Showcase 4 - there is one in HA (CGC 2.0) that is already at last summer’s transacted price (with 5 hrs to go). Action Comics 252 (one I am still looking to add) - just no deals. As pointed out last week a B&B28 finished above one year ago price while a GSX was down 40%. I think important to distinguish. I can say “stocks are down in price overall” and be correct. But energy stocks have risen substantially while some tech stocks are still 70-80%+ down from their highs. As some (vocally) predicted last year, there has been huge divergence in price movements in different segments of the comic market since last year… huge divergence. |

That same excessive spending drove rates higher - in turn impacting asset prices. Oversimplification (energy and food)… sure. In fact, the inflation in “asset” (loosely defined) values and the inflation in consumption goods stems from the same causal agent. Money supply. |

I notice not as much bulk seems to be selling, though when it does the prices don't seem to be too much lower, it's just not as often. To be fair I sell a lot of mid-range stuff and drek, not so much high end comics. Whenever I send stuff to MCS for consignment it seems to do fine, usually at least meets 90 day FMV. Sometimes things are a little lower, but I also get some things higher. |

Quote:Originally Posted by Davethebrave So far the drops have been fairly predictable items. Things that shot too high or things that had a temporary window open and close. Will be interesting to see if it moves into the less predictable items. One thing I'm surprised at is how well my 75 or so raw books at MCS fared. Probably 80% of them were sold in auction. The last few are ending in auction today. Didn't really track them individually, but as a group I was fairly pleased with the total sales. With the current difficulty and expense of getting books slabbed, I thought maybe there would be more resistance to buying raw books. I guess that tight MCS grade helps with liquidity. |

She Hulk #1 comes to mind. The book is already dropping and the show hasn't even premiered yet. Hype train is leaving town. Keys with staying power will of course hold value. Other books that were pumped up "just because" will eventually come back to earth. |

Casual blanket statements of market price drops are anecdotal at best. Sure some/several books have seen a decline in value compared to the peak of 2021/2022 but those are largely variant/spec books. A deep dive analysis is required to really see if the market as a whole has experienced a decline and specifically the blue chip books. |
