Disney Plus passes Netflix in subscriber and I'm skeptical--Poll18178

It was a one trick pony show but always hilarious. GAC private msg quote post Address this user

I don't understand why Netflix doesn't make money from selling old content to network television stations. Something like House of Cards which is now several years old. Seems to me that one of the network stations would pay a decent amount to be able to air it. I imagine if House of Cards showed up on CBC network it would draw a pretty decent audience and sell a decent amount of commercials. And since all the costs were accounted for long ago, it would be 100% profit for Netflix, straight to the bottom line. They are sitting on a ton of content that no longer has value to them but could be of value to another platform. And most of it is old enough that it wouldn't affect their subscriber base.

It's a good idea but your specific example may be problematic. Netflix or the production company (assuming they're not the same thing) has sued Kevin Spacey for $31M and won. They claim his nefarious actions were the downfall of the show. This could be complicating why that show isn't appearing elsewhere....or more likely just the fact that it stars Kevin Spacey at all is the problem.

@EbayMafia it seems like the direction that all the streamers are moving is to silo their content. I guess the thinking is If you can watch something somewhere else then why would you subscribe? Disney is going through a lot of effort to get all the old IP back in-house for sure. Farming out the old stuff might make sense but I don't know (and I doubt a streamer would say) how much rewatching it gets.

You think you had it tough? We had it tough. We used to 'ave to get up out of shoebox at twelve o'clock at night and lick road clean wit' tongue. We had two bits of cold gravel, worked twenty-four hours a day at mill for sixpence every four years, and when we got home our Dad would slice us in two wit' bread knife

The Sandman is a WB production streaming on Netflix…

Content has tremendous value. Old shows cost a good $ in licensing fees. One of the reasons Netflix started to cut that content and add Netflix originals to fill their library.

We had to watch network TV uphill both ways. Inhumane by today's standards.

I have no doubt, but at least so far I haven't seen a streaming service licensing their content elsewhere. They've all just been consolidating their own stuff under their tent.

These are good points....no way they license content when they're all clamoring for more content. It's the only way to keep subscribers.
