Submit or not? Superman 75 1993 multiple signatures18135

Collector wiley275 private msg quote post Address this user
I have a Newstand Superman 75 1993 I personally got singed and then put in a sleeve and stashed away. My question is should I get it graded and what grade do the pros here think it is? This will be my first submission. Thanks.

If you want to protect that book (awesome book!!) and still be able to show it off, then get it graded. There's more than one reason to get books slabbed, and because you feel an attachment to it or are proud of it, that's just as worthy as monetary value.

Welcome to the forum, by the way!!

Thanks! Long time collector, I have a large collection of CGC and CBCS just have never submitted any signature ones before. I know they ask when you submit what you think the grade is, and frankly I am not very good at that.

Actually, they just ask for a ballpark value for insurance purposes. That value can include the value of the signatures, too.

We have some folks with pretty sharp eyes on here, and when it's not quite so late at night, I'm sure they can help out with a grade. I'd give it a try myself, but I got some books back recently, and was I ever off! I can't remember the last time I was that wrong, so my confidence is not the finest at the moment.

If selling it is your goal Authentication is required

If your just looking to preserve and protect there are much more affordable and safer options than risking sending it to CGC or CBCS

That's not something I would be submitting for verification and grading. Too much chance that one or more signature does not pass (even though you know they are legit). Even if they all passed, I think you would have a hard time selling it for more than it's worth to you.

As for the signatures, consider getting them pre-verified by Beckett before you send the book in. If they think any of the signatures are dodgy, get the book slabbed as original art (no grade), but have the blue universal label.

im a autograph kinda a guy. and i have a ton of in person autos, but i always try to get them certified/authenticated any chance i can get in case my loved ones need to turn around and sell them after i head to the great Gotham in the sky... i wouldnt want my family to get screwed on price by some guy saying "well, its not authenticated so i'll give you twenty bucks."

i would definitely get it beckett authenticated and graded through cbcs. submit it now and get it back in time for next summer...

Here’s a low-value thought. If each signature has a 90% chance of passing (because they are all real/witnessed by you) and you have 6, it is a coin flip they’ll all pass.

That is if they actually verify each signature 100% independently and also independent of the value of the signed vs unsigned book (ie no conditional probabilities).

Where the signatures only add modestly to value, and in particular where any additional signature has a modest value impact (ie 6 vs 5 vs 4 etc), they could (should) ease their scrutiny once they’ve verified a few (say half) of them.

The potential for fraud vs effort becomes vanishingly low. This would be a statistical approach but likely more accurate than focusing on each independently on its own merit.

Now that you received the low value input, here is the higher-value thought. If you’re okay gambling a few $ send it in. If it isn’t verified just crack the slab and eat the cost.

Do you still have the option to not slab it if any sigs fail? That way you wouldn’t be out the grading and/or encapsulation fees?

yes - cbcs offers that option. another option is you can send it directly to beckett and just have them authenticate the autos without slabbing it.

If you don't care about grading you can do a slab only vsp. They'll verify the signatures and encapsulate the book. it's a cheaper alternative for books with lower value but have signatures you want verified. see below.

Anything under a 9.8 is worth less than $100. This could be a 9.0? Hard to tell from pics, but I see some major color rub very blunted corners and at least two spine ticks.top spine almost looks like an impact, but angle makes it hard to see.

From a value standpoint, not worth grading. However, I personally would try the VSP and slab only route, because I like sigs and this is a great comic event from the 90s.

Expect a 9.2 to 9.6 once it's pressed and it should go without saying that if it's subbed, it should be pressed before slabbing.

Pics arent that great but from what I can see, and from what I can't see but are surely present in some degree or another like finger bends, a press will improve the grade.

It looks like you have 6 sigs, that's $125 in verification fees...call it about $175 for verification, grading and pressing.

I def wouldnt sub it by itself, subbing it with another few books to lessen the impact of to/from shipping costs, may be worth it .

Say you get a 9.4, once pressed and subbed with all 6 sigs passing.////which probbaly shouldnt be too unlikely as the sigs look decent (not sloppy/rushed) and arent too likely to be rejected...if they were Jack Kirby or Stan Lee, that'd be another thing as both those sigs have high reject rates...Kirby bc his wife signed a lot of his books when his health failed in the 90's (Dynamic Forces Kirby sigs ,mostly) and Lee bc his sig varies so much, especially in his later years.

The resirability pf thois book hinges on it being a newsstand and the sigs.

The deciding factor is how tough it is how common are the sigs....Breeding and Jurgens are easy in CGC SS labels.

The selling point of this book would be it appears to be signed by all (?) of the creative team....and I'd say that 1 or 2 of the sigs have to be pretty uncommon.

I'd research that via searching each of them via the CGC & CBCS census.

That said, I wouldnt expect this book to turn much of a profit, maybe like $20 to $150 in profit, after all costs & fees are accounted for, as the invesstment involved would be high and it won't come back in a 9.8.

Depends on how many slabbed copies of this book have those 6 sigs on them. as this is a niche book. I def wouldnt run it as an auction, chances of it selling for well under the costs involved would be pretty high, unless you spammed this forum and the CGC forum with an auction link and you really know how to market copper age keys.

Personally, I wouldn't bother slabbing this book, I'd sub it to mycomicshop for consignment at $100 and just wait til it sells.

All above is likely true, but does NOT take into account that not everyone slabs solely for the purpose of turning a profit. Slabbing a book because you want it protected/preserved is just as good a reason.

That being said, there is nothing wrong with looking to turn a profit. The idea that no one should profit from their collection, or that anyone who does is a vile 'flipper,' is a little juvenile, IMHO.

There's a newsclip video out there of a woman buying two copies. I believe she said that one was for her kids college education and the other one was for her retirement.

Just get it verified and encapsulated, don't bother with grading. Even at a 9.8 it's barely worth the cost of expedited grading and shipping.

The names do matter also when considering options. Not to undermine the writers/artists but:
It's not Siegel, Schuster, Swan, Mortimer, Wayne Boring & Burnley

With those 6 mentioned above, I'd be getting it verified, Gold plated and buy a section in Fort Knox
