Got the urge to draw after seeing some of these awesome sketch covers. I'll post some more if I do any and will definitely post when my slabs come back.

These are all absolutely gorgeous.

I've never bought one, nor have I ever thought about getting one "commissioned"...

Can someone tell me how you go about getting one (besides buying one already done and slabbed)? Do they offer that at cons? What is the average price for something so detailed for the artists to do?

TIA.

Yes some artist have some already done and available for purchase at the cons. You can ask if the artist will do a sketch cover for you. Some have blanks but most prefer if you have your own. Prices vary depending on both the artist and the subject (bust, torso, half body, full body, background, color, ink, etc.). Many have sign up sheets. They may advertise their prices. I often will arrange with the artist (especially at one day or two day cons) to have them work on it and mail it to me when done to give them time on a piece. Check with the tattoo artist as well. They do some amazing art and many do sketch covers or other pieces.

Basically just ask. Worse they can say is no. Or that their price is out of your range. Many will refer you to another artist who might fit your price range. Be friendly and respectful of their time. Remember they are there to sell art and signatures. They love talking with fans. If they are busy with an art piece ask nicely if they can talk at that time. Most will.

I have quite a few in for grading with CBCS. I had 9 done at FAN EXPO Boston last week. Joe Rubinstein, Dan Parent, Tom Reilly, Scott Ambruson, Tone Rodriquez/Mostafa Moussa, Keith Williams, Ryan Santos, Clay McCormack and Kevin Maguire. Fernando Ruiz will complete his later since he was working the Kubert School booth.

Thanks @Byrdibyrd

I have several going into CBCS from Amy Carter but they need pressing to remove some creasing on the edges when they were done. They are older art. I got these for MerMay. I just started having my books slabbed last summer.

Thanks again @Byrdibyrd. I have a ton of sketch covers. Most are finally being slabbed. I have eight here waiting to be scanned first then they will be going to be graded, VSP'd and slabbed. Pieces from Steven A. Wilcox (3), Erik Fidel (2), Brendon & Brian Fraim (2), Eric & Amy Carter (1).

Ok, Fernando Ruiz just posted my commission from FAN EXPO Boston. Sharing here first before anywhere else (Fernando tagged me in FB so that does not count!).

awesome!

im curious - how do you get that CGC signature series if he takes several days/weeks to do it?

@multi007 This will have to be a VSP since no one could witness it. If I had Fernando submit it with that form everyone told me about then it might get the ASP. I am fine with either since it is not a resale piece. CBCS offers this service but I do not believe CGC does. It has to be witnessed by them or an agent. Some artist can submit work to them as well. If not CGC will not authenticate it.
