So at SDCC last week I spotted a booth for a site called CollectForever

What had caught my eye was that they had unfamiliar slabbed comics

It took me a little while to wrap my head around what exactly their business was (and I’m not sure I’ve got it doen, tbh)but as far as I can tell they are a kind of comic shop that integrates with Upper Deck’s e-Pack platform.

Basically you can purchase a comic and it is added to your digital account and can be sold or traded through their marketplace. At any point you can have the actual book shipped to you, so I guess ComicsForever/e-Pack are functioning like a bank, holding the comic until a user decides to “withdraw” the physical copy and have it shipped to them.

Right now they only seem to be selling upcoming books so I don’t know if they plan on expanding it such that you can “deposit” an old back-issue to sell/trade in their ecosystem

If anyone can make out more clearly the business model, please chime in. Here’s a local news article in the site

So the business model is the first thing. As I mentioned at the start was the strange slabs.

Apparently each book sold on the platform comes in a “soft slab.” This is basically comparable to the inner well inside a CBCS slab. The books aren’t graded, however. The slabs just list the vital i of of the comic: series, issue, date, etc. It looks like they have a hard-lab upgrade coming out and they had examples at the show. They looked nice enough at a distance but I didn’t get an up-close look at them.

Given that each each book is sealed I think the market might mainly be people who invest in comics as it allows them to buy and trade without having to store the comic themselves? But given that it’s only supporting upcoming comics and not investment keys I don’t see it attractive to that market, though maybe there is potential in the future?

I am not familiar with how a modern casual collector approaches things. Is it enough to have a digital representation of their collection knowing that the physical item exists somewhere? Considering how people have jumped on NFTs where there is no physical collectible at all maybe this is something of a compromise?

I don't want to brag, but cashiers are always checking me out. power_struggle55 private msg quote post Address this user
one thing i love about conventions is finding these companies you never heard of with a cool service.

So it kind of like the eBay collectible trading card vault idea. Or a hybrid NFT for physical comic books. My worry is what if the company fails after the initial influx of stock, then what happens to your inventory? Fire damage, theft, etc. insurance? Are those extra? Does the insurance value of the comic go up/down with auction and resale increases or decreases? Are there monthly maintenance costs? Are they set or will they increase after an introductory time?

If the viagra is working you should be well over a 9.8. xkonk private msg quote post Address this user
I saw another weird business (maybe similar idea?) because of an eBay listing. I think it was this https://www.pwccmarketplace.com/vault . They store your stuff, mostly cards but apparently also comics, but also run a marketplace. Someone with a pricey book on eBay said they were only going to accept buyers with an account at that place.

If I could, I would. I swear. DrWatson private msg quote post Address this user
That's a big nope, just like the eBay vault. I want to be able to get my hands on my junk whenever the mood strikes me.

@DrWatson same. I understand if you have so much stuff you can't fit it in your house, but otherwise I like to look at what I have once in a while.

It definitely seems ideal for those approaching strictly from an investment standpoint. Where they don’t care about the comic itself, just what they can sell/trade for without having to deal with keeping and storing them. However, I’d imagine that kind of collector would be primarily interested in high-dollar investment books, which the platform doesn’t deal in so I’m not sure who this is for.

Maybe the type that collects NFTs so they’re used to not handling the physical item regularly

Feel free to use my post as a checklist. multi007 private msg quote post Address this user
its common with silver and gold bars. you buy them. and the company can store them for you, until you sell them, and they transfer ownership to the new owner. anytime you want, you can pay a shipping fee and have them delivered to you. i can see this being used for high priced books, or LOTS of mid priced books. keeping high valued items in your private residence is a risk in that you really want to have specific insurance to cover total loss if, god forbid, a fire or flood. places like these are most likely fully insured.

@multi007 That makes sense for a certain kind of buyer/investor and is along the lines of the service @xkonk mentioned. I wonder what the thought behind CollectForever is. It just seems strange that they would focus exclusively on new books while the service seems tailor made for valuable key books

Staple topics, nice. makahuka private msg quote post Address this user
I did check out the booth. They did give me a book free of charge, and as mentioned by @dielinfinite, I can retrieve it at anytime. It doesn't seem to be meant for value at the moment, as what the young man has explained to me, and there seemed to be a heavy influence on trading. The book is a modern, something from Marvel's Spirit of Vengeance series. I'm out traveling and do not have my machine with me, only a phone. I'll read more when I get back. If there's anything not covered by the forum, I'll post. Mahalo hoaloha!
