Mint Condition Mickey Mantle Card from 1952 Could Exceed $10M at Auction clickable text Mickey Mantle might have retired in 1968, but the New York Yankees legend is still capable of rewriting the record books. The Associated Press' Bobby Caina Calvan reported a Mantle card from the 1952 Topps set is due to hit the auction block in August. The card's final price tag could surpass $10 million, which would shatter the existing record. A T206 Honus Wagner fetched $6.6 million at auction in August 2021. "The quality of the card is the key," said Heritage Auctions' Derek Grady of the Mantle card. "Four sharp corners, the gloss and the color jumps off the card." |

It's a nice card. At that point in time kids used to tuck baseball cards into their bicycle wheel spokes to make a flapping noise. I wonder what the ownership history of this card is? |

Unlike modern sports cards (which I do see dropping now) I think this will hold up nicely. It is pretty rare overall, has sustained value. Not a hype card. Remember that many markets lead the economy. Once a recession hits (though a technical recession may have already occurred in the US) there will likely be a policy pivot (rates down again). I am more concerned about further declines in the mass market, hype stuff that was already in a clear bubble. Not the collectibles that are scarce and continuing their 15%-ish annual growth (or in some cases caught up to that after below-trend growth). Of course these will decline too but ups come with downs. For long-term buyers the downs can provide opportunities. https://fortune.com/2022/07/25/rich-americans-ramp-up-their-borrowing-despite-recession-fears/amp/ |
