I should have put 'nice young couple' in quotes. That was what my dad thought of them before I met them and he wound up with a whole different perspective. Kinda like the Super Bowl party that happened while I was there. All the men were in the living room watching the game and all the women had to stay in the kitchen unless a man yelled for snacks or a beer. While I was in the kitchen, these women talked about all the n-word players in the game and how they weren't good for anything other than sports, but at least they had nice-looking a$$e$. I was absolutely mortified and got to spend 3 hours in that Hellhole, and my dad never noticed before that's what was going on whenever he watched a game there with his good buddies. It's not like I'd never encountered racists before, but this was the first - and only - time I was with them in their natural element. Never again.

Now I know why you seemed so familiar! I remember yeeeew.

I semi-regularly played at casinos years ago. Walked past slots for the card “rooms” (sections, usually). Made money. They also generally come around with free drinks. Nice.

Some friends played blackjack. Strong enough players to keep near breakeven. High enough wagering that their hotel rooms were paid for.

Don’t like pure gambling, not my thing.

Nope, nothing like that. Just not wise. Classic, “gamble with your head, not your heart”.

I went to Vegas and played slots for $10 just to say I did while I was there. All one has to do is look around when in a casino and realize that they don't build and maintain these fancy buildings losing money to gamblers. The house is majorly stacked against you. These are profit motivated companies....the games are designed for you to be at a disadvantage. I then think that my financial advisor can make me money with the money I'd surely lose gambling. High stakes casino gambling is for suckers.

Yes, it is. There are very Very few people who can actually make a living off gambling. Far fewer than the number of people who THINK they can make a living off gambling.

My ex/late father in-law would travel to Vegas about 4 times a year. He would go to his room, have food delivered, and sleep. About 1:00am he would hit the casino and walk out with cash. He says you gotta hit it late.

My grandpa on my father's side was one of those folks who could make a little from gambling. It was never enough to live on, though, so he opened a speakeasy. You can bet that made enough to live on!

It’s a small percentage of gamblers that do it for anything other than entertainment purposes. That’s why they stick out to us and the stories stick with us. I’m gonna guess that 95% of people who gamble in a given year do not adversely affect their lives.

If I were to gamble I'd say it affects them. Just very negatively. Vs scrooge mcduck...

Gamble in a given year, not gamble away a given year.

It’s very much like alcohol, or junk food, or any of a number of things that in moderation (relative to the thing, or sometimes person) is usually okay. Some can’t handle (the thing) and so the impact is … far more harmful.
