Is ASM 238 (with tattooz) going to overtake ASM 300 in value?18029

Everyone talks about ASM 300, no one ever talks about 238. Just noticed in recent MCS sales, looks like the values are getting pretty close to even. Just guessing there are a lot more copies of 300 out there than 238 as it was 5 years after, and I think ASM was much more popular by #300.

Maybe the potential movie speculation right now? I think asm 300 is a better long term book.

I'm sure that ASM 300 has more copies in the wild than 238 - but perhaps not as much as you could assume. Sales were unlikely to be that much higher as it was still a few years before the wide spread speculative bubble hit in comics. The difference in copies available probably has more to do with newsstand/direct. When ASM 238 came out the majority of comics were still sold at newsstands. By the time ASM 300 came out most copies were sold direct.

It seems likely Venom will remain a more important character to collectors than Hobgoblin. But tastes change. And while 238 is considered a great cover, 300 is an ICONIC cover.

What I could see happening is what you see with GSXM 1 vs X-Men 94. The books being close in value at 9.8 (and X-Men 94 actually worth more) because X-Men 94 far fewer copies graded 9.8 than GSXM 1. So there are a little less 3x more 9.8's of ASM 300 vs 238. With GSXM 1 there are about 6x more copies in 9.8 than there are in X-Men 94. But below 9.8 the popularity of GSXM 1 wins out on value.

So anyway, I think ASM 238 in 9.8 might achieve parity with ASM 300. But IMHO little chance of that being the case below 9.8

@IronMan The current MCS auction has an 8.5 of ASM 238 and a 9.0 of 300. I'm going to follow both and see where they end up. I think the 238 is ahead at the moment but I assume the 300 will have more late bidders if it stays low.

the problem with that comparison is that 300 was the arguably the first venom period...whereas the green goblin, then hobgoblin, nowdays red goblin (insert color) was already the 2nd generation of the character so its not likely 238 would surpass 300

So where do you price 238 in a 9.8 right now vs. 300 in a 9,8?
Is there is any movie spec like @Mmanick mentioned, would that make 238 pop at least until the movie is released, if & or whenever that may be....

Hobgoblin is derivative of Green Goblin and Venom is derivative of Spider-Man (in that he's a spider-related character). Venom is far more popular than Hobgoblin and I'd say that'll still be true if Hobgoblin is featured in a film. ASM 238 might see a temporary higher value than 300 but I don't think that'll be true over any length of time.

@IronMan everything you said I totally agree with except the part were you say that the cover to 238 is just great. I think that cover is iconic but alas less iconic than ASM 300. Venom is an antihero and Hobgoblin is a villain so yes, prices for ASM 300 will always surpass those of ASM 238, although I do have 3 graded copies of ASM 238 and only 1 of ASM 300.

The key, here, as mentioned is with Tattooz vs. without.

High grade 238’s with the Tattooz seem fairly uncommon. Mid grade 238’s without the Tattooz can still be had for cheap. The same can’t be said for mid grade ASM 300’s.

I kinda wish I still had my 9.6 newsstand with the tattooz.

Based on the last few sales for each book (direct edition) in 9.8, ASM #300 is currently going for around $1500 more than the #238.

@00slim is right.
The fact that ASM #238 has the unique built-in scarcity with the Tattooz is key to the key!

i mean who didnt want to use the tattoos? I kick myself in the butt a little because I remove the bonus digital code sticker to use code. i know it deducts 0.2 pts at cbcs (I dont mind as long as comic is in good condition otherwise).

Im really happy you have to mainly request a code from marvel to get code. I have Amazing spider-man #88 and Amazing spider-man 93. Both could be worth money one day. ASM88 did have the sticker but instead of removing it. I opted to just submit a request (i dont feel its cheating the system as I am not using the code given. I am just preserving the condition as best as I can) and ASM93 had to request

One thing to look for in those sales for #238 is whether any are CPVs. The CPVs in high grade go for insane amounts, especially in 9.8

That is an excellent point on the Canadian price variant of ASM 238. The last sale of the book in 9.8 was $7800. That is higher than the current GPA average for ASM 300, but it is not as high as the highest recorded price paid for an ASM 300 last year ($9200) During the height of the pandemic buying early last summer a number of ASM 300's in 9.8 changed hands at over $8,000.

What we also don't have any way of easily knowing is what sort of premium ASM 300's in 9.8 are bringing in newsstand. CGC doesn't note newsstand versus direct so George at GPA rarely is able to list if a sale was newsstand.

How about #300 9.8 signed by McFarlane vs. #238 9.8 signed by Romita Sr.
