With prices being down, is anyone buying?18022

With books being down in price, is anyone buying or are you holding off to see where they are in 30, 60, or 90 days? Personally, if I can get a book for under or about the cost to slab it or some other super great deal then I’ll consider adding it to my son’s collection. For example I got a yellow label OA sketch cover by Frank Miller recently for a very nice price. Otherwise, I’m holding to see where we are going to be in 30-60 days. If you are buying, then what are you taking off the market? |

To answer your question, no, this is not where the comics go to die. | MutantMania private msg quote post Address this user
My buying habits really haven't changed. Still buying collections if the deal is to good to pass up. I'm still getting decent prices for the books I'm selling as well |

Not much has changed for me really. If I see something I want, and the price isn't too utterly ridiculous, I'll try to grab it. I am waiting to see if the prices do keep falling so I can maybe take a look at some of the keys I've been wanting to get once they're at "normal person" levels. |

I'm not sure a blanket statement like this can be made. Ofcourse some books are down....maybe many compared to the peak time of 2021/2022 but record sales have still been made.

How are signatures holding up as a premium addition to FMV? I would think the glut of mail in signings would narrow that list down to a pretty small group of books and talent.

Unfortunately the books I tend to collect aren’t meaningfully down. My last auction win (last week) was at a record price. Several other books are not dropping. Been looking for an AC252 for a while and they are holding. For Marvel keys I’ve noted about 30% declines from peak (AF15 and IH181). For those I am waiting to see if they drop further… I may regret in a few years but that’s okay with me. I don’t generally chase movie hype Marvel given supply but I have seen many down 60-75%+ from peak. Cash has done poorly, unfortunately… Most of the (general market) unwind has been as expected in terms of relative movements. Timing and magnitude is impossible to nail 100%. I can see bigger pain coming in some specific markets (same as my previously posted views). |

My bigger book buying tapered off during the craze of the past few years but my run filling purchases were through the roof. I have my eye on a few keys at the LCS right now and the prices are dipping and he prices appropriately so we'll see over the next few weeks or months.

I only buy Frank Miller yellow labels that either have a remark or a sketch on them when I can get them for well below FMV. I have 7 of them now. Miller is a weakness for me. I own a 20” x 30” commission he did, and a Sin City prelim page too. Unfortunately, his published pages have gotten beyond of the level I’m comfortable paying. |

I've bought only 3 slabs in the last couple months and I think only one of them is meaningful to this discussion. Last night I bought a Terminator 1 CGC 9.6 (first Alex Ross work) for $100. I think he's a generational artist and even if I don't keep it forever, I couldn't lose much on it. I bought a Flaming Carrot 16 CGC 9.6 (First Mystery Men) for $160. It has a very small audience, they already had their movie, and it's another book I'm fine owning forever. Regarding the dip, I bought an Eternals 2 CGC 9.6 (First Celestials) for $99. This is down almost 50% from pre-movie and I figure it's low risk with possible high return if the Celestials play a role in MCU eventually. Other than those 3, everything I've bought lately has been low price raw books for runs and interesting covers. Average price probably less than $20. |

Still grabbing low hanging fruit that is affordable, but giving the blue chip keys a little longer to cool off before jumping in. My other hobby is PMs, and haven't seen that hit the lows I'm comfortable with either. All in time, regardless of what Bezos has trained me to accept.

I threw my hat into the ring on a low grade (CGC 2.0) ASM #2 earlier this week, hoping I’d get a deal. Prices are down, but they’re not THAT far down. At least, not for vintage keys. It went for about $400 below the last sale. Oh well. There will be deals to be had closer to the end of Summer, I think.

My take: Prices are still trending up over the last 3-4 years. 2020-21 was an abnormal peak that has mostly corrected. I sold a lot of my best books last year. The sell prices seemed too good to pass up. I’m not quite ready to buy again; I bought a car. |

Love the car you bought. But we also know car prices showed the same movement. Of course some cars more than others, just like some comics (or types) more than others. Quote: Originally Posted by Joosh |

This article is succinct but dated. https://web-static.stern.nyu.edu/om/faculty/moses/FineArt/Recessionart5.pdf I think some parts of the comic market have migrated closer to fine art (scarce, in the hands of higher net worth individuals, desirable as long-term collectible, etc). Of course fine art is a different price category. An AC1 would be considered modest-to-middling price-wise. Supply-adjusted it would move into “middling” at most. The difference is that at certain price points and certain types (of art or comics) the owner is unlikely to feel too pressured to convert to cash in a downturn. Instead they will appreciate the diversification. Of course that doesn’t apply to speculators, especially leveraged or highly concentrated ones. I think this partially explains the divergence in some parts of the comic market (along with relative scarcity). Further downside risk remains, absolutely. More in some parts of the market than others. But far from a certainty that it will be dramatic and very likely some parts of the market will remain good “investments” (for those seeking that in comics) for the long term… even at today’s prices. |
