Weekly Cover Contest #307 - Artist's First Cover17996

I'd like to say I still turned out alright, but that would be a lie. flanders private msg quote post Address this user
The Rules: (Pay Attention – This is Important)

You vote three check marks for your FIRST favorite, Two check marks for the SECOND favorite, One check mark for the THIRD favorite. You do not need to vote for three covers, but it is strongly encouraged!!! However... DO NOT VOTE EARLY!!! (Read on!)

Let's have fun with this!!!

A new theme will be chosen each week, so participants must find a comic book that fits the theme.

- One entry per person.
- Must be real comic books in circulation.
- Magazine size books are also okay.
- The book does not have to be in your collection.
- Variants are acceptable.
- The previous winner is allowed to win in this contest.

Each week we will vote on who had the best cover.

- Friday begins the new contest.
- Voting begins Wednesday at 12 noon EST which is the cutoff for submissions.
- Voting ends Thursday at 11:59 PM EST.
- Please vote through the built-in "three check marks" system described above.
- Don't vote early!
- The winner will be the cover with the most check marks.
- Vote three check marks for a favorite, two for the second favorite and one for the third favorite.

The winner will choose the next theme and begin a new thread.

In the event of a tie, the deciding factor will be if the entry was of a book in a CBCS slab (only one book in the set needs to be graded; if multiple are CBCS graded then the highest grade applies). If both books are in a CBCS slab (or neither are) then the cover with the most three star votes wins. If they are still tied, then the one with the most 2 star votes wins. If the tie remains, then a sudden death contest will decide the winner. All tied contestants are to enter a new cover based upon the theme of that contest. At 9 pm EST, Friday, the cover with the most votes wins.

Re-post these rules in your new thread to keep them easy to find and for new folks who want to play.

The list of previous contests and winners can be found in a pinned thread on the top of the forum.

**Please No Early Voting**

This weeks contest - Artist's First Cover

Show a comic cover that's an artist's first (ideally the entire cover or at least the majority of it). This should be the first penciled cover work but if they've done the inks as well, that's even better. Good Luck!

I BELIEVE this is Joe Kubert's first cover. I can't find any confirmation of that though. If anyone comes up with an earlier cover, I will delete this one and go with my backup pick.

@Rbolton
Actually, I believe that cover is by John Giunta (amazing artist - check signature on lower right) and it was some interior art that Frazetta did.

I suggest waiting until Wednesday afternoon when the submission phase is closed. Then, give every cover one star. After that, if you want, give your top two choices two or three stars.

@Rbolton
As I understand it, the first covers he did that would be considered comic book covers were for Warren Magazines, but as to whether that's a certainty, I can't say. In any case, I question if there are any records of which one he did first.

Byrdibyrd, I thought that as well, but then ran across this https://www.keycollectorcomics.com/artist/frank-frazetta,490/ pretty cool info. I thought I was familiar with most Frazetta work, but there are a few on that website that I had no clue about.

I love Key Collector, it's such a great resource, but also check comics.org/Grand Comics Database (https://www.comics.org/issue/213374/) because they are more detailed information and will provide references for their data. Frazetta MAY have done some inks on the cover, but what's more certain is that he did the inks for a story inside called "Snowman" penciled by John Giunta.
