Express pricing change announced17851

Anyone know what changed? This was posted today but the link they refer to is just the CBCS site, not to any specific changes.
I don't see any differences from recently.

New Express and Modern Express have gone from $40 to $60

Vintage Express from $60 to $80

Vintage Plus from $100 to $120

Express Plus seems to be unaffected

So they say to check the link (site), and the link still says $40... But it's really $60?

It's supply and demand. Perhaps it will stem the tide on submissions and improve turn around times.

@Sigur_Ros The price increase was spotted yesterday but we weren’t sure if it was a mistake or an unannounced price increase.

this answers that

Ok. I did see that confusion being discussed, but when they say "check the link", you'd think the link would reflect the news. Not unchanged information.

Par for the course here, I guess.

Thanks

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out. This could very well be a means of getting submissions under control. They're addressing the massive demand with appropriate pricing. It appears professional grading is becoming an elite service. I'm curious what the long term effects on the hobby will be. Maybe CBCS is positioning themselves as a premier grader (regardless of market sale perceptions) or they're the Collectors grader not the Dealers grader. Maybe hiring (to make any real dent in submissions) wasn't feasible. Maybe the hobby friendly grading alternative has decided to go head to head with the giant of the industry and are now on the offence.

CBCS modern express = 14 days = $60
CGC modern w/fast track = 21 days = $39

Those are without any discounts.
Can't compare discounted rates because CBCS isn't actually updating the site.

We're just about out of raw books that would/could justify an Express order anyway, but OUCH! Glad we got the recent one in, apparently just under the wire.

It would be interesting to know what a $250 FMV silverage book would cost to ship, press, grade and ship back.

Now they've made it facebook official. Not their own website, which they refer people to as in the OP, of course.

Did anyone notice that CGC immediately offered a discount on annual membership? It’s now $119, instead of $149, and you still get the $150 credit on your first order. I hope CBCS knows what they are doing. I had planned to submit an order to CBCS next week. Now I am not so sure.
CBCS - who is running the show here? After Steve left, you should have been reassuring everyone that everything would be fine and telling us how TATs and customer service would improve. Instead, you say practically nothing, and now you increase your rates again, just months after a major increase! This is not making me feel very comfortable or confident, just more confused.

Cgc just did an announcement on insurance costs as well. Basically insurance is included in fedex returns now. So that's an additional savings.

Is this some kind of joke? The post with exclamation points about their excitement to increase the cost of the service by 50% in some tiers is insulting. I hope that's a mistake.

I also got the cgc email for a discount for $99. Making $50 by signing up sounds far more exciting than the news from CBCS.

I thought I'd never see the day where I'd submit to CGC for the 1st time but this move from CBCS really grinds my gears. I'm struggling to not type a bunch of profanities at the moment.

@esaravo CBCS is definitely making it VERY difficult to support them right now.

I have some books going out for signatures at HeroesCon and Chicago but after that, I think I’m done with grading until things cool down or another competent company enters the market

At least it's a slap in the face from the new president who hasn't bothered to make an announcement or interact with the forum, instead of our beloved @sborock.

IMHO this is yet another mistake CBCS has made recently

They just set these new prices a few months ago. Now they are raising them? Even if CBCS believes - and it might well be true - that they set the Express service price too low it would be a better look to live with it a year.

Modern Express is now the same price that 2 day modern was before the change. I considered Modern Express a great deal, so I will keep using it. But modern express sometimes had TAT's at a single week. But sometimes 2-3 weeks. So again, still a tier I and others will use.

There is also the shipping. The more submissions I do for others the more I choke on the really expensive shipping insurance. A lot of orders it doubles or more the price.

CGC is now - with their recent change - way, Way, WAY cheaper on shipping for most orders.

Speaking of CGC, their TAT on Modern/Economy Fast Track books is now competitive with CBCS' New, Modern and Vintage Express. So it's really only the FMV limit's that are a plus to CBCS.

I'd also mention I have NEVER had a cracked slab from CBCS - until their new Gen 2 holder. Now so far I'm aware of four. And where CGC has a relatively smooth and trouble free process for getting cracked slabs returned and reholdered, I'm not finding that to be the situation at CBCS.

CBCS's best feature - IMHO - remains grading. IDK - but CGC just seems all over the place right now while overall way strict. One gets the feeling grading is really rushed and done by a lot of cautious newbies right now.

If anyone is interested, as of this moment the old prices are still on the pricing page. I printed them out just for comparison's sake. But if you do a submission online it's the new prices.

Hopefully this will lead to shorter wait times for standard submission's as there won't be quite as many people using express to jump the line.

No doubt this is an adjustment because the initial express prices weren't enough and it only worsened their TATs and backlog.

I believe the solution should be that they should have moved the goal posts out for express. Make it two months, not two weeks. With two week Express services, they will never get to the pre-express submissions.

You all had to see this coming when they 1st announced the new pricing structure. When a grading was $24 with a nearly a year turn around time but for $40 you could get it back in 2 weeks tons of people were going to flood the express line to the point they would have a hard time keeping up. The huge drop in return time for a very small price increase wasnt sustainable. They were going to have to make the price more inline with the benefit.

Wouldn't that mean longer wait times if they aren't willing to pay for express?

No, because if they don't pay for express they don't jump in front of any orders you already have in. When people use express they jump in front of all standard orders that are already in thereby pushing those standard order TAT's back further and further each time. If they don't use express they slot in behind any orders already in thus not affecting those TAT's at all.
