Dark Knight Returns Cover ILLUSION?17805

Roughly 36 years ago, I bought DKR right off the rack, and like everyone else, I thought the cover to the first issue was AMAZING. And as I write this, the original art is going for over $1.5 million dollars at auction. However... it dawned on me that I might be interpreting the cover incorrectly? I've assumed for 36 years that the silhouette of Batman jumping is of him jumping AWAY from our viewpoint, but it dawned on me that he might be jumping TOWARDS us? I copy and pasted the image and attempted to create the proper viewpoint by tracing his outlines as you can see in the image below. What do you guys think? AWAY from us? Or, TOWARDS us? Or maybe Frank Miller deliberately made it ambiguous as to how it is to be viewed? ![]() |

Towards. Thematically DK…Returns. I can see the perspective of away, but jump away from what? Nice idea. |

That's an interesting question. I never considered that the cover would be open to interpretation like this. Pretty cool, and I can see it being either way.

I too bought a bunch of these off the shelf. The cover was striking. No pun, etc. But I've never seen it any way except facing toward us. Thinking of pre-ordering this, but at $675 I'm not sure yet, lol.... ![]() |

Quote:Originally Posted by Sigur_Ros Not necessarily. I'm right hand dominant, but my left eye is my dominant eye. As a result, I've learned to shoot as a lefty. While I realize you say "almost always", I'd still have to say not necessarily. Unless there is some study out there. I'm not sure how'd you prove one way or the other. Regardless, Batman using his right hand to shoot doesn't prove anything in my mind. Now, if there are panels of him eating or writing right handed, then I'd agree that he is right hand dominant. |

I’ve seen it as more of a side view rather than toward or away. Like that gif indicates Quote: Originally Posted by MurrayC |

Gotta admit, I never had a clue about the Dark Knight cover illusion. Now that I see it, I have to assume it was intentional. Pretty sure I always saw Batman coming forward. I just showed to my daughter, her immediate view was Batman looking away.

I believe we are discussing Schrodinger's Bat in which the figure is both jumping towards the viewer and away from the viewer.

So I know I'm probably the only one, but I HATE Frank Miller's art. I think it's sloppy, childish, lazy art and disrespectful to the medium. I also cannot STAND looking at this cover because my OCD takes over and can't get over the "split cape" , which NEVER has been a thing - ever. WHY did he split that cape? You look in the book and there's nothing about it being ripped up the middle ... just ... drives me crazy. But forget the cape, his art just sucks (to me) and I can name a dozen artists I'd take that SAME story and have them re-do and it would just make it all better. I'm not trolling, I know will probably get a lot of "you are an idiot" but I can't help it, I just cannot stand Frank Miller's style. That being said I can't draw a straight line without a ruler, but I know what I like. ![]() |
