One thing that’s been bugging me with this label change is the “why” of it. I’ve got a decent business background and usually when there’s an unexpected change like this I can think it through and figure out the business benefit. In this case I can’t. There was nothing broken that needed fixing. It’s not going to change their revenues or profits. I can’t figure out any business rationale for this. The only thing I can guess is that it’s for the personal benefit of some well connected individuals. Individuals who could have easily been buying up and hoarding these type of books in advance of this announcement.

Doesn't rhe label change force folks to get a basic membership? That was my thoughts on why.... you figure it doesn't save that much ink and while it might save some time, I would have thought a cut and paste template existed for such thjngs.

@EbayMafia I see where you're coming from, and it's especially worrisome when you keep in mind that if you want to work for CGC you pretty much have to pledge to give up doing anything with comics that would involve making a profit other than just the work assigned by CGC. So either all that is just window-dressing to make customers feel more secure about sending their books in, or there's someone on the outside who wields an undue amount of influence. Either way it doesn't sound good, and I have to question the idea that they came up with this label-change concept in a void.

For what it's worth, people on the CGC forum are absolutely blasting this decision. Maybe the powers that be at CGC will take notice of their customers mutiny.

Just wait for the next announcement in 6 months... it will be they are removing the title of the book due to consultation with "key members if the community" this way you wont know that they don't know which book they just graded. custom labels will now be 80% of the label, the CGC logo will be another 10% and the 9.6 for all books will be the last 10%

Quote:Originally Posted by sly I don't think it's necessarily grading as a whole, just the one company that's trying things out in the hopes of attracting more customers (apparently the ones who don't want buyers to know the defects of the books they sell), but are in reality alienating other customers (the ones who want more information available regarding books they sell/buy). I think it's a foolish move on the part of CGC, but what do I know? I send most of my books to CBCS anyway. |

This hyper secretive nonsense with graders notes and needing level 5 S.H.I.E.L.D. clearance (or paying off Fury) has been a thing for as long as I can remember. It just morphs every few years into a new variant. It's such a poor policy from day 1. It's just piss poor and I know deep down those stubborn bastards know it. |

Of course they know it. If it cons even one person to spend 25 bux it was worth it to them. They don't count how many people are already ensnared in their economy tier comic trap...

I am sorely tempted to not comment because I'm clearly in the minority opinion. I don't really care. The numeric grade on the label has always taken into account ALL OF the defects. So this is no change to the grading standards, just to what is put on the label. If collectors have pet peeve defects that make a book undesirable to them, then learn to recognize them and/or pull the grading notes. Otherwise a 4.5 remains a 4.5. If that grade is good enough for your collection, why sweat this labeling change? Yeah, a 4.5 MIGHT have a detached centerfold. If you hate detached centerfolds (it's 4.5, I could care less) than only purchase higher grades or pull the darn notes. Of course @Bronte is correct - this is a way to get more people to cough up the $25 membership fee so they have access to grading notes. This is one of a number of areas CBCS is better. Much better actually. Not only are grading notes free from CBCS without any membership, but you can scan the QR code with your smartphone and have the notes instantly. Maybe this change will get some people to stop buying on Whatnot and/or take the time to pull notes before buying. Probably not, but it would be good if that happened. @Byrdibyrd @PaulPop CGC has never been a company that changes course based on customer pushback or unhappiness with changes or standards. It nearly needs to be seismic in nature to move that company. I doubt this hits that standard, but we will see..... |

@IronMan You are absolutely correct in that the numeric grade doesn't change whether there are a few grading notes on the label or not. What I take issue with is the bald-faced money-grab at the expense of the very customers who pay them for their services. It's not a good look. BTW, there is nothing wrong with your opinion. Had CGC never put notes for certain defects on labels to begin with, this would be a non-issue because it'd be what we're used to. The problem now is this change is not what we're used to, and it seems to be a change for the worse. |

It eliminates the need to limit the amount of notes. |
