CBCS Only Slabs You Just Got Back #217617

I've spent years perfecting my brand of assholery. DrWatson private msg quote post Address this user
The last two were subbed in hopes of upgrades. Neither one upgraded. They both stayed the same. The ASM 67 is one of the prettiest 7.0s I've seen and the X-Men 48 is no slouch either.

I'm going to sell or trade the ASM 67 while the X-Men 48 is a keeper.

I was joking.

Yes, I've been searching for a nice looking, reasonably affordable copy for a while. I'll trip over a copy one of these days.

Yeah, I thought so. There has to be more raw high grade copies out there in the wild to trip over.
Here's to tripping... lol...

Here are the rest of the books I got back:

Disappointing. I figured a 4.0

Another grade I thought would be higher.

Bad picture but double signed by Eastman and laird in 90. Signed on interior.

And my favorite Cap cover

These just came in today. I used the 20 (or 25) percent code word from September/October promo.
I got 4 disappointments on this order. All 4 disappointments were always a possibility. The first two up are Marvel Secret Wars 8. I bought two and only read one. Was very careful with them. I felt they looked like 9.6-9.8 contenders,as-is. I tried to hedge my bets by using pressing for the first time. I felt at least the unread comic would come back a 9.8, I was wrong.

The second disappointment was this comic book which has a CBCS raw grade of 5.0. I hoped that it would retain its grade since I took really good care of it. I was wrong.

Last one , that I will not post, was a cheapie comic that was signed by Stan Lee. I bought it that way, I did not witness the signature, it came back unverifiable/fake. I won’t post this one because it was always a crap shoot.

Oh well, “lose some, lose some.”

They're still cool though. Glad to have them back.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, I don't think I benefited from the press and clean. I will probably do a press and clean on an older book with wrinkle issues, instead of "hoping for a higher grade on a high grade book.

I will always have books pressed. It eliminates the What If? That said, it's not often, and one shouldn't expect, that a press and clean can always turn chicken shit into chicken salad.

I completely agree. But just to make sure I didn’t muddy the waters the diet two pictures are of different books, they just coincidentally graded the same. Those are the two I had pressed but probably didn’t need it. Sorry if didn’t make that clear. But he “what if “ would’ve nagged me to no end

I've gotten quite a few grade bumps on books that I thought didn't need a press or I couldn't see what was wrong with them.

I've also had books pressed and received fuck all for my trouble. For the most recent examples, see the ASM 67 and X-Men 48 posted earlier in the thread.

The cover wrap on both those Secret Wars books is awful. They must be damn near perfect otherwise to be 9.6 copies.

I thought they were just, spine rolls - figured press would fix that. I see that it's a mis-cut as (I think) @DrWatson pointed out in another threat (quite a while ago). I wanted to see if pressing could help raise them to a 9.8, but since it's a mis-wrap, there is no way to ever achieve the hoped for 9.8.

That's an even miswrap. You have the same amount of white from top to bottom, and the cover art is square.

The two Secret Wars books pictured have fairly extreme angled wraps. On the top copy, I bet part of the corner box is very visible on the back cover. The art and trade dress is badly off plumb on both books.

So yes, it will change the grade.

But it's still a miswrap, is it not?

CBCS accepts miswraps in the 9.8 grade as evidenced in the picture....how severe a miswrap must be to impact grade, I'm not sure....someone from CBCS would need to answer that.

You can get a 9.8 with a slight miswrap.

Yeah, those are miswraps and not spine rolls. Pressing can fix a spine roll, but not a miswrap. You can get 9.8s with miswraps, but not 9.9s or 10s.

Perhaps you got 9.6s instead of 9.4s by having the books pressed. Better a strike out at bat than a failure for never having swung.

It would have to be bad enough for a significant portion of the cover to be missing, in my opinion. That said, there are some fugly 9.8s out there.

This one is a mixed bag. I bought it by mistake from MCS. It grew on me. It started life as a 9.4 from the cgc signed by Bill Sienkiewicz and complete with inky fingerprints on the back cover. Sienkiewicz is known for getting ink all over his fingers.

Before:

I was hoping for a 9.8. Alas, it just wasn't in the cards. It did grade bump to a 9.6 and those inky back cover fingerprints are no longer there. So, technically, I won, but it feels a little like winning first runner-up.

After:

So, @sportshort, even a win can sometimes feel like you lost, but I'm still happy with the outcome. The fingerprints are gone and I ended up with a book where the focus is on the signature and not the grade... as it should be. In hindsight, I should have just had the signature verified by Beckett and not had the book graded, but the lure of a potential 9.8 SS book was just too great.

I'd probably do the same thing again.

So here's where it gets a little odd (I added the Bold lettering). They both seem to have the same exact issues. It makes some sense since they both got the same grade. It's probably the grader's personal "style/verbiage".

002 says "few spine stress & tiny wear top spine breaks color"
001 says "couple small spine stress & tiny wear top spine breaks color"

Looking at those photos and the grader's notes, you should be happy with the 9.6s.

I suppose you're right, My guess is that they are super-duper tiny issues, almost negligible. Anyway, it is what it is. It's become ok. but next time, I will ask for a press screening. I'll feel better with a press after that.
