Buy the GRADE? Or buy the PAGE QUALITY??17554

I snorted just a little. jaysonslade private msg quote post Address this user
At what point would you let the page quality lean you toward taking a lower grade for whiter pages? For example: a rare Silver Age book in 3.0 WHITE vs the same book in 4.5 CREAM TO OFF WHITE? (Both being the same price.). Another example: another rare Silver Age book in 7.0 WHITE vs 7.5 OFF WHITE TO WHITE?

In both of those example I would go with the higher grade books.

Depends on what the book looks like. If it's slabbed, I can only see the cover. White won't stay white forever.

So little difference between 7.0 and 7.5, too. Sometimes the page quality gives that extra .5 as well.

I have a Bat 251 CGC 9.0 with OW pages. I wish for ow/w or white because I could get another $100 or so if I sold it. I can't see the pages though. 50 year old book can have o/w pages, I guess.

It depends on how the books presents. PQ isn't as high on my list of criteria as it may be for others. I'm more concerned with the wrap and staple placement before PQ, but it tends to come down to eye appeal for similar condition copies of the same book.

If it’s slabbed I would go with the one that presents better

Because page quality is a limit on grade levels I would usually choose overall grade over PQ. In both your examples too.

I'm good with, up to and including Cream PQ. So I would choose highest grade for books with up to Cream PQ before looking for lower grades, assuming all books presented reasonably well.

Page quality is a load of shit from White to Cream. It's mercurial at best.

Thank you sir. May I have another? Siggy private msg quote post Address this user
I usually go with whichever presents better. I'd think a 4.5 COW would look like a 5.0 or 5.5, assuming the PQ is why it's at 4.5

I purchased a TOD #10 7.5 that looks like an 8.5 (what the seller thought it would get when he submitted it), but the COW hit it. I'm okay with it.

I didn't think PQ affected grade until one hit Light Tan.

9.4 can have cream too off white pages.

Light tan/ off white can be a 7.0

Personally if it's a readily available book I'll buy a book on price.

If it's a 9.4 silver I'd rather a white Page

If it's a 1938 DC I'll buy a brittle as there are only maybe 15 surviving copies and you can't be picky like your spidey 300 which is extremely rare in any grade and page quality

Joking aside it's price

Cheap price under FMV don't really care.

Page quality seems to be the most subjective part of grading. Re-submit and watch it change, for better or worse.

Isn't page quality incorporated into the grade?

If so, I simply consider it a graders note that is explicitly identified on the label.

If not, I give up with grading companies because it should be

@Nuffsaid111 Pretty sure I've seen 9.8's with something less than White pages. I always assumed it was a note that was separate from the grade.

it would be more in line with “supple” pages. Off-White/White and Off-White can still be supple like new. I would more inclined to buy a 9.8 White over off-white/white or Off White depending on age like that ASM 194.

People there's this book called a grading guide by overstreet.

It will have defects that a book can have in a particular grade including page quality

But CGC and CBCS have their own standards.

Those standards were originally based on dealers who were using overstreet grading standards and there grading was what cgc grading is based on and also later cbcs

Be that as it may, they are not the same standards.

So long as it's not brittle, page quality is quite a ways down my list of things I look at for a book. In both OP's scenarios, I'd take the higher grade without a second thought.

Unless page quality is crap, it doesn’t really matter unless you have two books same grade. Like a redone kitchen, doesn’t really increase value, but can make it more desirable.
