Here is my technique for shipping out a slab. We have been seeing a lot of really poor methods from books that forum members have received lately with slabs and raw books. I am sure someone here will critique my method. It's all good. Just wanted to share how I do it.

![]() Step 1. First I use a section of a pool noodle from the dollar store. I cut it wide enough to fit into a 1097 USPS box. |

I like this approach a lot except one minor concern in your description (but not your photos). Step one should be to put the slab in a bag. Otherwise a poorly placed box in heavy rain could result in water damage. You have it covered in your photos but to me that is Step 1 ;-) |

I use slab shippers foam in a usps 1095 box in a 16x14x4 box. So essentially I double box every slab that leaves my house. I don't sell raws, but last time I had to because it was too fat for a gemini mailer. I used a couple of pieces of cardboard sandwich the book, wrapped in bubble wrap in a 16x14x4 box. Edit I bought plumbers insulation foam to ship oversized magazine slabs in 1095 box in a 16x14x4 box. The foam was like 4 bux for 3 qty 6 ft lengths of foam. |

@BrianGreensnips @Davethebrave @Bronte These are awesome ways to ship slabbed books. Add Gemini mailers inside a box for raw books and it's done. As safe a way to ship books as it gets. |

@Byrdibyrd Exactly. You figure it costs maybe 5-10 bucks more but in the end its cheaper than paying for shipping or reholder and less headache with customer. I'm all about making my life easier... |

I get swathes of bubble wrap from CBCS alone, I can't recall the last time I bought a Gemini mailer. I just use the ones I've gotten mailed to me, and since I sell so few raw books, I can keep myself supplied just with re-using. Helps with sales when I don't have to pass on S&H to buyers. Someday I'll run out because I have thousands of raw books and only a couple dozen mailers, but when that happens I'll be buying mailers because I do NOT like the idea of sending raw books to buyers with a chance of them getting a disappointment and me getting the ugly hassle of returns & refunds. |

The pool noodles is brilliant though, I have to admit to being impressed the first time we got one like that. |

@figment I agree. I think I will add cardboard to the front and back. I guess it can't hurt.

I add a layer of cardboard front & back when I ship slabs, and it did save me a return once a few years ago when I buyer got a VERY perforated priority box but the added sheet of cardboard took the damage. I just cut up boxes that are no longer in good enough shape to use as boxes anymore. A little elbow grease on my part and it's free packing material. |

Looks good and I like the pool noodle idea. I start mine out with the slab in a bag and put it in a Gemini mailer. Then box it with bubble wrap and then put that box in a Priority box.

try putting the slab in USPS Box 1092 and pack it well with peanuts or bubble wrap to that the slab doesn't move around. Before placing the slab I reinforce the 1092 box with cut out strips of cardboard for added rigidity. After closing the 1092 box I place the slab in a USPS box 1095 that has once again been reinforced with additional cardboard.

I was a big proponent of a bubble wrap cocoon inside a 1092 then put into a 1095. Shame they changed dimensions.

Quote:Originally Posted by SpiderTim Yes, these boxes should have extra cardboard at both ends. It's also important to have some extra bubbkewrap at tge top bubbkewrap n bottom to be the first absorbent of pressure....not the foam, which as the first n only layer of defense, as thick as it is, seems like it could cause SCS. I use 2 priority bubblewrap mailers to bag each slab, cardboard insert at bottom, bubblewrap folded over blah blah blah. Tbh, I can't believe these sorts of threads are started over and over again. |
